Distributing grant money to nonprofits isn’t something high school students normally learn about, let alone actually do. But for more than 25 years, the Delaware Community Foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Board has put high school students in charge of examining issues in their communities and ultimately deciding how to allocate thousands of dollars in funds for various programs that address them. Today on #TheGreen podcast, Delaware Public Media’s Joe Irizarry chats with Yolanda Rushdan, Senior Program Officer for the Delaware Community Foundation, about the value of giving young students an opportunity to help their communities through philanthropic work. From education reform to climate change and housing affordability, this year's Delaware Debates dove into the big issues shaping the future of our state. With Election Day just around the corner, candidates laid out their visions: ? Governor’s Race: Matt Meyer (D) and Mike Ramone (R) clashed over school voucher programs, affordable housing, and climate resilience investments. Meyer emphasized public school funding and stronger housing intervention, while Ramone pushed for fewer building regulations and educational vouchers. ? U.S. House Race: Sarah McBride (D) highlighted health care reform, reproductive rights, and global leadership. Her message? "It's not about identity—it's about policy that delivers for Delawareans." The Republican nominee for the seat, John Whalen of Millsboro, declined his invitation to the debate. ? U.S. Senate Race: With Lisa Blunt Rochester (D) and Mike Katz (I) absent, Eric Hansen (R) spoke alone, enforcing his stance as a moderate Republican whose priorities are cutting federal spending, reducing inflation, tax cuts for working families, and restoring trust in government. The election is just days away! Make sure you’re ready to cast an informed vote by watching the full debates here... The candidates running for Governor, U.S. House, and U.S. Senate in Delaware recently wrapped up a lively set of debates. Here’s what stood out: ???? Governor’s Debate: Education was the hot topic! Mike Ramone (R) wants voucher programs to give families more school choices, but Matt Meyer (D) warned that vouchers could underfund public schools. Their clash didn’t stop there—they also debated affordable housing policies and how to make Delaware more climate-resilient. ??? U.S. House Debate: Sarah McBride (D) took the stage alone but had a lot to say! She covered a multitude of topics during the debate, including weighing in on ongoing U.S. involvement in foreign conflicts. ??? U.S. Senate Debate: The U.S. Senate debate stage was also graced with only one candidate, leaving Republican nominee Eric Hansen to face a solo Q&A session, who noted his disappointment with Blunt Rochester's lack of attendance.
