Cyber Security Club at USF Aimed at Competing in CTF and Cyber Defense Competitions

The Whitehatters Computer Security Club (WCSC) is a Student Government Activity and Service funded organization at the University of South Florida. WCSC was originally founded in 2005 with the goal of developing a competitive team to play in DEFCON's Capture the Flag competition. Today, although the primary focus is still on participating in various information security competitions, the goals of WCSC have expanded to include raising awareness in regard to issues within the field of information security among its membership and the community. The club participates in multiple events throughout the year, most of which are Capture the Flag competitions, but WCSC additionally hosts and participates in other events such as Boot Camps, Engineering Expo, Technology Socials, etc. We hold weekly meetings during every semester, and accept USF students of all majors and all skill levels as members. Through membership in WCSC, students have the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience with real-world security problems, as well as build resumes by participating in the numerous events the Club is engaged in. We strive to provide as many opportunities as possible for our members to grow, learn, and become ideal candidates for information security positions after graduation.

  • Tyler Krapfl completed the Pickle Rick TryHackMe challenge by scanning for open ports, finding credentials in robots.txt, and using Gobuster to discover hidden directories, leading to portal.php. After logging in, he bypassed command restrictions using tac to read the first and second ingredients and sudo tac for the third ingredient, completing the challenge through web enumeration and command execution. Additionally, Tyler worked on a Wireshark exercise, filtering HTTP traffic, following streams, and decoding an encrypted message using Base32 decryption to reveal hidden data. In addition, Rhian Peterson had the opportunity to teach basic networking at @WCSC. She covered a variety of topics starting at the fundamentals of how data flows across a network using visualization from the OSI Model and TCP/IP model Rhian said "Networking is an incredibly important topic that lays the foundation for any security professional to determine how to defend their organization and it was an absolute pleasure creating a foundation for those interested in the field!"

  • Special shoutout to Reliaquest for stopping by, last week, Wednesday and Thursday meeting to discuss the spring RQ lab and the role of the intern. This gives a chance for our members to ask them questions about the interview process, day in a life during the RQ spring lab, and entry level position. During Thursday's meeting, they were able to dive into the topic of business email compromise and highlight potential vulnerabilities.   • Hopefully everyone is all well, we just want to say thanks for everyone who came out to our introductory meeting and the past meeting as we’re almost half-way through the semester already. We look forward to the rest of the meeting as we have many activities in store for you all and a couple guest speakers.
