Dr. Lynn Smitherman represented Wayne Pediatrics during the Rides to Care press conference, highlighting the importance of doctors’ visits during the first year of life. “During the first year of life, we closely monitor each child’s growth and development [and] partner with parents in promoting child safety, caring for their children when they become ill. Last week alone, I had two newborns cancel their appointments because they didn’t have transportation.” Expectant mothers, new mothers, and caregivers of an infant up to one year old can utilize the free Rides to Care service by calling (313) 876-0000. On November 18th, Wayne Pediatrics hosted a press conference to officially announce the Rides to Care program, an initiative spearheaded by the Detroit Health Department and Uber Health. This program offers free roundtrip transportation to doctor’s visits for pregnant mothers and caregivers of infants up to one years old. Rides can be scheduled by calling (313) 876-0000. We were honored to hear from Mayor Mike Duggan, Denise Fair Razo, Chief Public Health Officer; Mary Sheffield, City Council President; Dr. Iris A. Dr. Laura Benjamins, Adolescent Medicine specialist, recently traveled to Sydney, Australia to present a research study called “Empowering Detection: Universal HIV Screening for Teens to Prevent Missed Diagnoses.” This study was performed in collaboration with Dr. Eric McGrath, Infectious Diseases & Prevention specialist at Wayne Pediatrics (Horizons Project), and Dr. Elizabeth Secord.
