I have been pondering some of my thoughts on #DePIN since joining Borderless Capital. Today I’ll talk about the two types of DePIN. Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN): The emergence of Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN) heralds a paradigm shift towards more adaptable, resilient, and accessible systems. DePIN represents a novel approach to infrastructure deployment, characterized by its decentralized nature and the two distinct types it encompasses: Commodity DePIN and Bespoke DePIN. Commodity DePIN Commodity DePIN embodies the ethos of versatility and inclusivity. This type of DePIN empowers projects to leverage a wide array of hardware options, ranging from commonplace devices like laptops and smartphones to more specialized platforms such as Raspberry Pi units. This variant of DePIN involves the custom design and fabrication of hardware tailored to the unique needs of a specific project. Companies like Hivemapper Helium and DIMO epitomize the ethos of Bespoke DePIN by engineering hardware solutions optimized for tasks such as mapping, connectivity, or data processing. By fine-tuning hardware components to align seamlessly with project requirements, Bespoke DePIN offers unparalleled performance, reliability, and scalability. Moreover, bespoke hardware opens new frontiers for innovation, enabling projects to push the boundaries of what is possible in fields such as IoT, telecommunications, and environmental monitoring. The Future of Infrastructure As DePIN continues to gain momentum, it promises to revolutionize the way we conceptualize, deploy, and maintain physical infrastructure. Whether through the adaptable versatility of Commodity DePIN or the tailored precision of Bespoke DePIN, this decentralized approach holds the potential to democratize infrastructure development, foster innovation, and address pressing challenges in diverse domains ranging from transportation and energy to healthcare and beyond.
