Yesterday, WCM received $5,000 worth of orchestra chairs as part of UScellular's The Gift of Connection! WCM is one out of 50 non-profits in the United States to receive a donation as part of the Gift of Connection program! This is the second year that WCM has been awarded. Our Executive Director, Susan Bender, and our Administrative Assistant, Jenn Williams, stopped by Lambeau Field to accept a grant awarded to WCM, funded in part by a grant from the Green Bay Packers Foundation. Dr. Lily Chia Brissman, long-time piano faculty at The Wausau Conservatory of Music, passed away yesterday afternoon, July 24, 2024, after a brief illness.?She served this community over the course of many decades, first from 1991-1994 and then from 2000 – 2023. Born in China, Dr. Brissman lived in Taiwan and Malaysia before coming to the United States to study music at Alverno College in Milwaukee.? Her mother’s story of life in China was translated by Dr. Lily and her husband, Professor Barry Brissman.? Xie Bingying (1906-2000): ?A Woman Soldier’s Own Story, provides a fascinating portrayal of a woman fighting to free herself from the constraints of ancient Chinese tradition amid the dramatic changes that shook China during the 1920s, '30s, and '40s. Once in the U.S., Dr. Brissman earned her bachelor’s from Alverno College and her master’s from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana – both degrees were in piano performance.? She earned her doctorate in accompanying from Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ, and maintained a 4.0 GPA.? She conducted post graduate work at the Royal Academy of Music in London and studied with Eugene List and Broos Smith.? She was also coached in art song by luminaries J?rg Demus and Dalton Baldwin.? Extended studies took her to the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood, MA, and the Aspen Music Festival, both with scholarships for accompanying. Dr. Brissman taught at several colleges and universities across the US (Oberlin, Kent State, Boise State University, Central Michigan University, University of Connecticut and Concordia College in Moorhead, MN) before joining the faculty at the Conservatory here in Wausau.? Her many collaborative and solo performances were broadcast live from both Minnesota and Wisconsin Public Radio programs, Door County’s Birch Creek Performing Arts Festival, and notably, The White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Dr. Brissman’s students loved her for her exacting musicianship, her generosity of spirit, and her ability to see the entire person, not just the musician.? She treated her students with respect and instilled in them a respect for the discipline of studying music.
