Thanks to our incredible Youth Justice staff, we’ve achieved a remarkable milestone. A young man, previously in out-of-home care for six challenging months, was recently reunited with his father. This inspiring outcome was made possible through consistent family engagement and strategic advocacy, turning what seemed like a prolonged case into a heartwarming success. Our approach not only reunited a family but also saved over $100,000 by preventing further out-of-home placements. This story underscores the power of teamwork and dedication in creating positive, lasting impacts on the lives of the youth we serve. Today, the Interagency Program for the Intoxicated Driver (IPID) Committee had the privilege of hosting a pivotal meeting with all treatment providers from across Waukesha County. This collaborative session focused on addressing the pressing issue of intoxicated driving. In 2022, Wisconsin faced significant challenges with nearly 23,000 OWI (Operating While Intoxicated) convictions and 7,519 crashes involving impaired drivers. These incidents led to 184 tragic deaths and 3,556 injuries. Alarmingly, impaired driving contributed to 5% of all crashes and was responsible for 34% of fatal collisions statewide. Our strong determination is to reduce these numbers through collective efforts and ongoing dialogue. Collaboration among treatment providers, law enforcement, and community members is crucial. We are grateful for the valuable insights shared today and look forward to continued engagement. It's through partnership and combined efforts that we can drive meaningful change, provide effective treatment, and create safer roads for all.

Waukesha County’s efforts to combat substance-related fatalities are featured in Wisconsin Counties magazine’s February 2025 issue. The article, Science and Compassion: Modernizing Responses to Substance-related Fatalities in Waukesha County, highlights the county’s data-driven strategies and community-focused solutions. Public Communications Coordinator Nicole Kelly showcases the work of Stephanie E., who leads the Overdose Fatality Review (OFR) team, and Public Health Officer Benjamen Jones, who champions collaborative, research-based responses.
