Bringing solar light to students living off-grid to help empower them for a brighter future.

关于我们

The WATTS On Lighting program is currently operational in 3 countries with plans to scale further. The program empowers students and communities that live off-grid without electricity or lighting access with solar lamps. The program focuses on 3 main sections: 1. Training and sensitization which includes parents and teachers. 2. Monitoring and reporting impacts involving the schools and county education department. 3. Awards and recognition for best performing and most improved schools and students in the various regions of the program. The program has proven significant improvements on educational performance and for health and wellbeing at home, as outlined in the documentary film 'LIGHT' produced about the unexpected impacts of this program. We partnered with ChildFund in 2024 to scale internationally. ChildFund is an international organization that has been in operation for over 85 years and is found in 70 countries through its Alliance networks supporting millions of children with their diverse array of programs. The WATTS On lighting students Lives program operates under the NGO 'econic earth foundation' and is a program built under this 501c3 non-profit based in California, USA. For many children in Luangwa District, sunset means study time is over. Without reliable lighting, their dreams are often limited by darkness. But not anymore! Through our partnership with econic earth foundation through the WATTS On Lighting Students Lives?program, we’ve handed over 200 solar lamps to Grade 5, 6, and 7 pupils at Chimutengo, Mangelengele and Mandombe primary schools. This initiative isn’t just about providing light, it’s about equipping children with the tools to succeed in their education. Now, they can study longer, prepare for exams, and take confident steps toward a brighter future. At the flag-off ceremony, Luangwa District Commissioner Luke Chikani shared the community’s gratitude: “ChildFund’s initiatives have brought life-changing improvements to our community. Beyond today’s donation, ChildFund’s programs help our children and families thrive.” Thank you to econic earth foundation , SeAH and all our partners for supporting this initiative. #ChildFund #LightingTheFuture #EducationForAll #BrighterTomorrow #SolarForEducation

Fourteen-year-old Ibrae shyly avoids the camera. However, beside him, his aunt watches as Ibrae signs off a form after receiving a solar lamp. Rich and full laughter bubbles up from her chest as she embraces the solar lamp in her hands like a precious gem. Ibrae is a grade 9 student in Marsabit county, Northern Kenya. He is among the students who received solar lamps through the WattsOn Solar Lights project supported by ChildFund Kenya in partnership with the econic earth foundation . The initiative will distribute 10,000 solar lamps to students in #Turkana, #Marsabit, and #Kajiado counties to improve educational outcomes for students. “Inadequate lighting for students in rural Kenya and marginalized communities affects the ability of students to study at night and eventually affects their academic performance. With these solar lamps, the children will have an opportunity to study at night, which will eventually better their education," said Alice Kamau, the Country Director of ChildFund Kenya during the official launch of the project.? Ibrae, with gained confidence, smiles softly, expressing his joy stating??“With the lamp, I hope to achieve my dream of becoming a pilot.” The solar lamps are therefore helping to bridge the school performance gap and improving the quality of life. The project is also a key contributor to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 aimed at enhancing access to affordable and clean energy for all people. Reducing reliance on kerosene lamps, candles, or firewood, which are costly and harmful to both health and the environment. ?"The solar lamps positively impact family life and relationships, creating an opportunity for parents to be involved in their children’s education, helping with homework, and discussing their progress," says Nicole Watson, founder of econic earth foundation . We're so excited to collaborate with Saudi Youth for Sustainability, Sudan Climate Collective and Edama to connect youth from these regions on key topics to be discussed at #UNCCD #COP16! ChildFund aims to be active in both zones to help integrate the voices of young peoples' concerns for their future environment and opportunities. After all, to ensure children and young people can grow up healthy, educated, skilled and safe, they need a future in which to grow up. By bringing young people together, we hope for a stronger overall call for global leaders to create a more supportive environment where children and youth can collaborate to combat degradation, desertification and drought. #ClimateAction #YouthVoices

  • Solar lamps and solar lighting solutions provide significant benefits for students who live in areas without access to electricity. Some of the key advantages include: 1.?????Study Time Extension: Solar lamps enable students to study after sunset, extending their study hours and allowing them to complete homework and prepare for exams effectively. This extra time can lead to improved academic performance. 2.?????Improved Safety: In many areas without electricity access, kerosene lamps or candles are commonly used for lighting, which pose fire hazards and #health risks due to indoor air pollution. Solar lamps are a safer alternative, reducing the risk of accidents and health problems associated with traditional lighting sources. 3.?????Cost Savings: Solar lamps eliminate the need for purchasing expensive kerosene or batteries for traditional lighting sources. Once installed, solar lamps require minimal maintenance and no ongoing fuel costs, making them a cost-effective solution in the long run. 4.?????Environmental Benefits: Solar lamps are powered by #renewableenergy from the sun, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and decreasing carbon emissions (approx. 92kg per year / per lamp). They contribute to #environmental sustainability by promoting clean energy usage and reducing air pollution. 5.?????Community Development: Providing solar lighting solutions to #students can have broader positive impacts on the community. Access to electricity can spur economic development, improve #healthcare services, and enhance overall quality of life for residents. 6.?????Educational Opportunities: Access to reliable lighting can open up educational opportunities beyond basic schooling. It can enable students to engage in distance learning programs, access educational resources online, and pursue higher education, ultimately expanding their prospects for the future. 7.?????Empowerment and Independence: Solar lamps empower students and their families by giving them control over their own energy supply. They are not dependent on centralized electricity grids or costly fuel sources, fostering self-reliance and independence. In summary, solar lighting solutions offer a range of benefits for students living without electricity access, including extended study hours, improved safety, cost savings, environmental sustainability, community development, enhanced educational opportunities, and empowerment. By addressing the lack of access to electricity, solar lamps can contribute to breaking the cycle of poverty and improving overall well-being in underserved communities. Please consider supporting our program today and generously donating a lamp to our long list of students eagerly awaiting their lamp for our 2025 WATTS On programs econic earth foundation .

After a great 'accidental' meeting at Cop28 last year, I am thrilled to finally announce that econic earth foundation has partnered with ChildFund International - Africa to expand our solar lamp programs for students living off-grid under our 'WATTS On Lighting Students Lives" program. With this new partnership we will be scaling into Zambia and Cambodia next year with further expansion into Kenya reaching thousands of students and empowering them with a simple but life changing tool, Light!! Please check out the article for further info and thank you to all our supporters who have helped to get us this far with the program to our first major scale up! And it's true, nothing in life is truly an accident, it's inspired action implemented into our lives. :) Special thanks to Keeva Duffey :) ChildFund Zambia, ChildFund Kenya, #SDG7 #SDG4 #Solar #SolarLight #Education #empowerment ??

  • We launched our program to bring a simple but much needed solution to the thousands of students who still live without electricity access yet against so many challenges still attend school and work hard to complete their education. We understood through the initial pilot program conducted as an econic earth project, in partnership with FASAL Kenya and Green Sun Cities that solar lights bring transformative results both at school and at home. This led us to refine, rework and develop this program further in order to scale it into schools in multiple regions and countries where most needed. Now working in collaboration with ChildFund and YAFNET Kenya we are able to bring light to thousands of students who need it the most right now. We're currently operating in over 40 schools in Kenya and will scale to over 100 schools in 2025 in Kenya, Zambia and Cambodia. Our goal is to reach 100,000 students over the next 2-3 years and continue scaling so that no child remains without a light in their hands. Please continue to follow our work on our new program website WWW.WATTSON.ORG #Solarlight #WATTSOn #Solar #econicearth #SDG7 #SDG4 #educationempowerment #Education #LIGHT
