A big day here WATTMORE ! Today we announced the official news of our Nebraska utility Lincoln Electric System 3-MW/12-MWh BESS energy storage project getting full approval and moving forward. Check out the latest research from the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory highlighted in this article by Utility Dive on the benefits of Hybrid renewable energy systems - pairing solar or wind with energy storage. Lots of interesting takeaways and discussions items on the benefits and imapact of one hour duration systems vs. four hours and beyond for congested areas. But one conclusion is clear - energy storage brings solid benefits to the grid, to local energy markets, to the project developers and investors. Utility Dive reported, "Adding one hour of energy storage to wind and solar plants in transmission-constrained regions increases the energy value — based on real-time electricity market prices — of plants near load centers by 49% and the energy value of plants in resource-rich areas by more than 81%." I post a lot on Linkedin about climate change, renewable energy and public policy to address climate issues. Sadly, the impact of hurricane Helene has hit WATTMORE's partner, customer and investor Pine Gate Renewables who is based in beautiful Asheville NC. I have visited Asheville many times, the Art District, the town, stores, homes and workers from hundreds of businesses have been wiped out. I have communicated with Pine Gate Renewables's CEO Ben Catt and offered our help, support and efforts to get his employees safe and stable post this natural disaster. Climate week NYC - 2024 - Day 4 - Grateful & Rainy Another great day yesterday of meetings and events, we had our quarterly board meeting at Arosa Capital our lead investor, then a set of the best meeting locations ever. A terrific stroll down the The High Line (https://lnkd.in/gdc_3gbJ and then a terrific outdoor park bench meeting with Matt Candler with Batteries Included Fund (the best venture/family office fund name ever!) for an energy storage nerd like me. Then a pitch and call with Silversmith Capital Partners while strolling with a herd of beautiful artistic elephants in Chelsea / Meat Market area. Today WATTMORE will be at Newlab and the Brooklyn Navy Yards for climate futures event. WATTMORE is part of the last energy storage focused cohort, working to bring energy storage to scale in NYC. Tonight we have the The Good Food Institute event on how to drive systematic change in high impact climate donation. To keep the NYC love going, today I broke keto diet to have bagel with lox and cream cheese. I am grateful for the organizers and city for hosting such an impactful event. Cities like NY are full of wonderful people, public spaces, art, architecture, food and life. Our challenges and aspirations for cleaner more sustainable future are shared across all humans, together we can achieve change. Stay focused and optimistic and better days are coming. Climate Week NYC - Day 3 - Focused & Fired Up! Day two was stacked with EFI (Entrepreneurs for Impact) meetings, lunch with my fellow renewables CEO Yaniv Kalish (owe you one), sidewalk reconnect with Virginia Emery and presentations at Perkins Coie and drinks with my dear friend and Perkins Partner Susan Betcher. Day three I had my board meeting at our lead investor Arosa Capital and our terrific board member Lillian Shattock. Now off to investor meetings, more climate presentations and dinner. I will note that many of investors, climate leaders and founders/operators I have met this week are talking about the market opportunities in energy storage. It is a giant market, with complexity, few incumbents and strong defined need for intelligent energy management software. Climate week - Day 2 - Excited and Optimistic Rush hour from Brooklyn on the M train - not for the out of town guy. I grew up in NY (suburbs - amazing Ardsley) but am out of practice on the joys of subway travel. I survived. Spent the morning with fellow EFI (Entrepreneurs for Impact) CEOs. In awe of my peers, so much passion, brains and commitment to a cleaner more sustainable future driven by impactful businesses doing big things. Our coach Chris Wedding has created a community of climate focused impact CEOs from across the country. It is a real community of peers, sharing the hard truths and daily struggles of startup life. We also share the joys of closing rounds, project success, patent news and personal updates from new kids, to new marriages and health habits for success.
