The Challenge: Manufacture and ship a continuous, one-piece 120’ modular expansion joint The Solution: WBA customization Ohio DOT needed several modular expansion joints to complete their Cleveland Innerbelt modernization plan. One of those joints was to be 120’ long. Traditionally a joint of this length would be shipped in pieces, then welded on the jobsite. In order to save on labor, and to ensure that the joint was welded to perfection, ODOT asked WBA to ship the joint in one piece. This would also help to speed up the overall installation time and lessen the construction burden to the traveling public. This effort created the need for WBA to innovate and process change to handle such a large unit. It even drove product innovations to make the full-length idea more efficient.
