The Water Research Foundation (WRF) is the leading research organization advancing the science of all water to meet the evolving needs of its subscribers and the water sector. WRF is a nonprofit, charitable and educational organization which funds, manages, and publishes research on the technology, operation, and management of drinking water, wastewater, reuse, and stormwater collection, treatment and supply systems—all in pursuit of ensuring water quality and improving water services to the public.

I had a great time attending WQTC for the first time this week. I kicked off my WQTC experience by moderating a terrific session on microplastics monitoring and ended the conference watching a fantastic session on HABs monitoring. I can’t think of a better way to end the conference then getting to hear my PI Zia Bukhari present on our active research project (WRF 5266). I learned a lot and can’t wait to attend the conference next year!

This week marks the beginning of a 2-year PFAS research pilot project that Kimley-Horn’s Denver Tech Center office was recently awarded. This unique PFAS research project is funded by the STATE OF COLORADO DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT (CDPHE) Emerging Contaminants for Small or Disadvantaged Communities Grant Program for the Wigwam Mutual Water District, south of Colorado Springs. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Office of Research and Development will be separately funding the water quality analysis for the yearlong field testing. The research team will be re-purposing the Bureau of Reclamation funded Pitch-to-Pilot research trailer as described in this recent WRF article (https://lnkd.in/gzZspdxC) but will be modifying the trailer to incorporate other PFAS treatment technologies such as anion exchange resin and granular activated carbon to compare against the electro-coagulation + ceramic ultra-filtration system. The Kimley-Horn team will collaborate with Red Rocks Community College students and teachers in addition to teaming with the country’s top PFAS researchers to provide QA/QC: Mike Mickley, PhD (Mickley and Associates) and Christopher Bellona, PhD (CO School of Mines). Tomorrow, Nov. 19th, join The Water Research Foundation (WRF) for the final installment of the “Transforming Aeration Energy in Water Resource Recovery Facilities through Suboxic Nitrogen Removal” webcast series. In this session, Carollo’s Michelle Young, PhD, Lead Technologist in Wastewater Treatment along with other experts from the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts will present key findings from a full-scale demonstration at the Pomona Water Reclamation Plant (PWRP). This innovative project at PWRP has achieved remarkable results—reducing aeration energy consumption from 1400 kWh/MG to 600 kWh/MG by transitioning from an average dissolved oxygen (DO) level of 2.0 mg/L to 0.8 mg/L, all while maintaining effective nitrification. These insights are vital for water resource facilities nationwide facing budget challenges, sustainability targets, and tighter nutrient regulations.
