HOPE FOR WIDOWS - GROUP 3 ?? This year marks our third working with Maasai widows in our Hope for Widows Program. We recently met with nearly 40 incoming participants to gauge their needs and interests. Each widow has a unique situation, so these first meetings help us fact-find and conduct baseline questionnaires. It's also a chance for widows to share their stories with others -- often for the first time publicly. By sharing, participants step out of the darkness of isolation and into the light of their new community. They realize "they aren't the only ones" and "my situation is far better than hers, so I am I am fine." Gratitude and connection arise naturally. Here are some facts about these women: ?? On average, they have 5 children. ?? Some women have been widowed recently while others have been widows for a long time. ?? A few were young when they married much older men. ?? Several were mistreated and taken advantage of by their deceased husbands’ families. ?? Some have experience selling jewelry or food, while a few feel lost because their husbands were their sole providers. ?? A common thread is that they all want to take care of their children and afford school fees. Hearing their stories is heartbreaking, heartwarming, and inspiring. Part of this first training session is to help women see that they have already done so much to provide for their families. This perspective builds self-esteem and get them fired up for the next training session. This Friday, we'll have the Goats and Grants Ceremony for this new group of widows where we'll distribute 3 goats and a $150 cash grant for this incoming Group 3. We’ll also “graduate” our pilot group, many of whom are doing steady business, turning good profit, and helping out others in need. To end the meeting, a local group ranch official also shared his story for the first time. His father died when he was young, so he was raised by a widow. But he never felt like he didn't have a father--that's how strong, present, and loving his mother was. There is indeed Hope for Widows in Kenya! #hope #widows #hopeforwidows #community #nonprofit #empowerment
