Formed in 2007, WUCA has worked for over a decade to ensure that water utilities and their communities will thrive in the face of emerging climate challenges. WUCA leverages its collective utility experiences to develop leading practices, science, planning and implementation-based resources, and trainings in climate change adaptation that are actionable, equitable, and serve as a model for others. Additionally, WUCA collaborates with Federal and other national partners to deliver trainings and resources, and provides input to Federal agencies on our needs as stakeholders for climate change services. WUCA comprises 12 of the nation's largest water providers, providing drinking water and other water services to over 50 million people across the nation. WUCA representatives include climate adaptation planners, water resource specialists, and other sustainability leaders. Executive leaders of the 12 member agencies help guide WUCA's work, which agency staff advance through our annual work plans. WUCA’s power is through partnership; the agencies pool member utility resources and collaborate with partners across the water utility, climate adaptation, academic, and public sectors to advance new and impactful work.

    National water resource adaptive planning expert & climate resilience leader

    The Portland Water Bureau implements an Adaptive Water Supply Planning process to make informed decisions about the best ways to invest in a reliable and resilient water supply system to serve our customers. Water resource, planning, operations, engineering and financial experts from across our utility convene annually in an Adaptive Planning Workshop to evaluate water supply system trends and prioritize water supply projects. We just held our 4th Annual Adaptive Planning Workshop this week. Our teams worked to assess the condition of customer demand and water supply conditions so we can right size Portland’s drinking water system and infrastructure for the future. This adaptive process allows the Portland Water Bureau to be nimble, flexible and pivot to meet changing population, climate, water resource, environmental, legal, financial and economic circumstances. Super useful in a time of constant change! The Portland Water Bureau is a recognized national and international leader in the innovative field of Scenario and Adaptive Planning, and a member and former Chair of the Water Utility Climate Alliance (WUCA) which strongly advocates for this type of planning.   • Water utilities are key players in their communities when it comes to #climateadaptation. WUCA spent the last year advancing leading practices in climate change adaptation and mitigation with a focus on guidance that is actionable, equitable, and transferable.
