In November, the state of New Mexico, Western States Water Council, WestFAST, and SWCA Environmental Consultants hosted an important workshop in Santa Fe to address a crucial challenge: securing more funding for water projects and initiatives. Uniting leaders across state, federal, tribal, philanthropic, and private sectors, the workshop explored new and innovative funding options to meet New Mexico’s water needs now and into the future. By focusing on priorities like small community drinking water regionalization, aquifer mapping, and riparian conservation, this initiative is setting the stage for smarter, more resilient water solutions. With unprecedented federal investments like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), this effort is a clear example of how partnerships and forward-thinking approaches can turn challenges into opportunities. The #SafeDrinkingWaterAct is turning 50 this year! That is five decades of protecting the water flowing from our taps, but there is still work to do. Today's anniversary is a reminder that we need #SafeAffordableWater for all. #SDWA50

This announcement is a much-needed step forward in the work to remove lead from drinking water across the county. And while replacing lead services lines over the next decade is an ambitious goal, this kind of urgency sends a clear message: Everyone deserves access to clean, safe, affordable drinking water, and we must act quickly to make that a reality. Together, state and federal governments, water systems, on-the-ground organizations, and advocacy groups must join one another to make this goal possible. One year ago, the Supreme Court removed federal clean water protections for millions of acres of wetlands and miles of stream. As natural buffers for excess stormwater, the loss of wetlands jeopardizes communities’ flood defenses and puts more U.S. communities at risk of floods and catastrophic (and expensive) damage.
