Congratulations to researchers at the Translational Genomics Research Institute on their recent publication! ?? They sequenced 1,046 human samples to identify genetic markers of invasive Group A Streptococcus (iGAS) in Arizona. Researchers analyzed the emm types (genes used to classify iGAS strains) and found that 11 of the 32 distinct types made up more than 80% of the samples. ?? One strain, emm49, rapidly spread and was linked to outbreaks in long-term care facilities. Genomic surveillance helped detect and respond to these clusters that would have otherwise been missed.
