Narrative change for radical futures | Design Researcher & Strategist | PhD Candidate at IIT Institute of Design, ID Food Systems Action Lab
?? Drumroll please... Last Monday, I successfully defended my doctoral thesis ‘Cultivating Narrative Change in Collective Sensemaking’! In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing key insights, discoveries, and tools from my research through a bi-weekly newsletter: Seeding Radical Futures. Sign up to gather your seeds and join the journey! Until then, here’s a glimpse of what my research is all about: ? We can’t tackle today’s social and ecological crises with the same mindsets that created them.? The mindsets of efficiency and control will only get us so far.? ?? To cultivate radical and transformative change, we must shift how we make these issues and envision alternative futures. Guided by this premise, I explored: ?????? ...how design can harness the transformative power of narratives and storytelling to disrupt entrenched mindsets and make room for radical possibilities. Over five years, I worked within the food system transformation space, tackling systemic issues like wasted food and food insecurity alongside a vibrant community of advocates, researchers, and creatives. This work is a reflection of the collective wisdom and creativity of my collaborators. Across three studies involving diverse collaborations, I propose a design-driven approach to cultivating narrative change in collective efforts to address systemic challenges. Sharing this milestone with the many people who made it possible was deeply moving. I am forever grateful to: ? My advisors Weslynne Ashton, Laura Forlano, Ph.D., Carlos Teixeira, and Maria Villalobos for their unwavering support and guidance. ? My closest companion on this journey, Irem Tekogul, whose care, creativity, and resilience kept me grounded. ? Maura Shea, Rae Perez, Emma VanHouten, Ariella Knight, Alice Weston, Steffanie Espat, and Constanza Mendoza-Guerra who joined me in navigating valleys of ambiguity and peaks of discovery. ? My partner Hari Pudipeddi who kept me sane, alive and inspired; my family in Turkey, and my newfound family in Chicago. And to so many more... It truly takes a village. However you may have touched this work, I am grateful to you. Last but not least, I am thankful for the generous Fellowship from Grace Colby and my scholarship from the Fulbright Association, both of which made this journey possible.
