Narrative change for radical futures | Design Researcher & Strategist | PhD Candidate at IIT Institute of Design, ID Food Systems Action Lab

?? Drumroll please... Last Monday, I successfully defended my doctoral thesis ‘Cultivating Narrative Change in Collective Sensemaking’! In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing key insights, discoveries, and tools from my research through a bi-weekly newsletter: Seeding Radical Futures. Sign up to gather your seeds and join the journey! Until then, here’s a glimpse of what my research is all about: ? We can’t tackle today’s social and ecological crises with the same mindsets that created them.? The mindsets of efficiency and control will only get us so far.? ?? To cultivate radical and transformative change, we must shift how we make these issues and envision alternative futures. Guided by this premise, I explored: ?????? ...how design can harness the transformative power of narratives and storytelling to disrupt entrenched mindsets and make room for radical possibilities. Over five years, I worked within the food system transformation space, tackling systemic issues like wasted food and food insecurity alongside a vibrant community of advocates, researchers, and creatives. This work is a reflection of the collective wisdom and creativity of my collaborators. Across three studies involving diverse collaborations, I propose a design-driven approach to cultivating narrative change in collective efforts to address systemic challenges. Sharing this milestone with the many people who made it possible was deeply moving. I am forever grateful to: ? My advisors Weslynne Ashton, Laura Forlano, Ph.D., Carlos Teixeira, and Maria Villalobos for their unwavering support and guidance. ? My closest companion on this journey, Irem Tekogul, whose care, creativity, and resilience kept me grounded. ? Maura Shea, Rae Perez, Emma VanHouten, Ariella Knight, Alice Weston, Steffanie Espat, and Constanza Mendoza-Guerra who joined me in navigating valleys of ambiguity and peaks of discovery. ? My partner Hari Pudipeddi who kept me sane, alive and inspired; my family in Turkey, and my newfound family in Chicago. And to so many more... It truly takes a village. However you may have touched this work, I am grateful to you. Last but not least, I am thankful for the generous Fellowship from Grace Colby and my scholarship from the Fulbright Association, both of which made this journey possible. How might?unlocking the expertise, creativity, and motivation of supermarket employees transform food donation? How can worker-engaged approaches further benefit retailers and employees? To address these questions, RECIPES researchers from?Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health,?Johns Hopkins Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, &?Maryland Institute College of Art Center for Creative Impact (formerly the Center for Social Design)?convened a cohort of 10 frontline employees from four Albertsons Companies’ grocery retail stores in the Mid-Atlantic area (known as "Fresh Rescue Champions"?or "Champions")?to co-design a set of strategies to improve the food donation?program. The project is rooted in the idea that when given the opportunity to think closely about needs, frontline workers can utilize their lived experience and expertise to develop strategies?that both differ and complement those developed by others. Consultant, Data Analyst, Researcher specializing in international business, economic development, and food systems

I recently contributed to the Wasted Food Research Network’s second Annual Meeting earlier this week, and it was such a reinvigorating experience that continues to catalyze my passion for research, collaboration, and sustainability. I felt so supported being in the presence of countless academics, experts, and change-makers from diverse disciplines to share our progress and “braintrust” how to ensure equity in convergent solutions on a complex problem like wasted food. Proud of my team for presenting our current project on “Integration of Wasted Food Data in Food Systems Models” and capturing excellent input from meeting participants to enhance our data visualization and modeling work as we aim to submit to food-related / sustainability publications in the near future. There may be an open-source solution in the works… Also delighted to help facilitate this year’s “Power Hour: Courageous Conversations & Having a Disruptive Mindset” with the unforgettable Dr. Monica Cox, Winifred Opoku, Ran Li, Margarita Cozzan, MSH, RDN, and Peter Locher. We’ve done incredible work since receiving National Science Foundation (NSF)‘s grant to tackle wasted food reduction, and I look forward to all we’ll achieve together in the next few years. ???????????????? #wastedfood #convergence #sustainability #foodsystems #nsffunded

I had a wonderful visit with Purdue University's Dept of Environmental and Ecological Engineering last week. Thanks John Sutherland, John Mulrow and Hua Cai for inviting me! In a graduate research seminar, I shared the convergence research approaches that we use in the Wasted Food Research Network #recipes, emphasizing our partnerships with diverse government, community and corporate actors, and facilitating productive dialogue across these groups around #wastedfood prevention and management. With the lovely undergraduates (pictured here), we explored how they as engineers might collaborate with design, management and social science professionals to address the complex societal challenges that we face.
