As the final feature for #WomenInConstruction Week, we have Katy Stark, senior budget manager for the Legislative Campus Modernization project (LCM). Her upbringing was heavily influenced by construction, having family members working administrative roles, contractor roles, and even business owners in this space. ?? She overcame adversity as a woman in this field by embracing being a female in a male-dominated industry. Her first hard hat and steel-toe boots were purple, and her safety glasses were hot pink! She doesn’t let the gender stereotypes intimidate her. When asked about advice that still sticks with her, she shared, “Keep asking questions and never stop learning!” ??♀? In honor of Women in Construction Week, our second feature highlights Ginny Streeter’s perspective on what it’s like to be a woman in a male-dominated field. Ginny is a communications consultant supporting the Legislative Campus Modernization project (LCM). ?? From a young age, Ginny rejected gender norms and fearlessly pursued her interests, showing that women can thrive in any field. Women in construction face many misconceptions. She emphasizes that it’s about personal growth and professional excellence, NOT competition. ?? This advice from her mother has always stuck with her: “Don’t let your gender dictate your future.” Ginny’s mom was the first woman to take agriculture classes at #WSU and has been her guiding light in this male-dominated field. Her advice for women in similar fields? “I don’t let stereotypes dictate where I am. Too many men try to limit what women can do because they are intimidated. Do not allow that.” By living her dreams and serving as a role model for young women, Ginny consistently shatters stereotypes and paves the way for future generations. ?? It's Women in Construction Week! We're celebrating the amazing women at DES shaping our future. First up is Ariel Birtley, a program manager in Facility Professional Services. With a passion for architecture since childhood, Ariel emphasizes the importance of design in community building. As a mother of five with over 20 years in construction, she believes women deserve respect and support in their careers while also being recognized for their roles as mothers. Her advice for women in similar shoes: ?? Always keep the vision in mind. Stay focused and determined. ?? Foster healthy team relationships. Seek to understand their perspective and find common ground. ?? Take time for yourself, especially for mothers. The work will still be there when you return. A shining example of the Washington State Department of Enterprise Services Energy Program and how performance contracting can expedite a project execution by a factor of three. In one third of the time and with established guarantees. Magic!
The Washington State Temple of Justice (TOJ) project is a shining example of our dedication to sustainability and innovation. This historic building, one of the oldest on the Washington State Capitol Campus, has been transformed to ensure it remains a cornerstone of justice and efficiency for the next century. UMC’s Energy + Environment team, serving as the Energy Services Company (ESCO), led the project under Washington’s DES Energy Services Performance Contracting program. The focus was on upgrading the building's energy infrastructure, including HVAC, plumbing, and lighting systems. UMC guarantees performance, savings, and costs, and is committed to maintaining the quality of these upgrades for years to come. One of the most notable achievements is the projected greenhouse gas (GHG) savings. The initial phase will reduce current energy usage by over 15%, with future carbon savings of over 60% once the new campus district energy plant is completed. This project underscores our commitment to environmental responsibility and sets a new benchmark for energy efficiency. https://lnkd.in/gSmDXVb5

Did you know? ?? “Sine die” is a Latin phrase meaning “without a day.” It’s used to describe the adjournment of Legislative session, typically occurring in March during even-numbered years. Coincidentally, this is when the saucer magnolia trees on Capitol Campus usually bloom, earning them the nickname of “Sine Die trees.” To preserve this tradition, we recently welcomed a second Sine Die tree. The original tree is pictured here, and the new addition is planted across the street. DES staff planted the new tree thanks to a group of dedicated senators aiming to preserve these blossoms for generations to come. Are they currently in bloom? ?? Visit both trees the next time you're on campus, or book a botanical tour to explore more of our plant life: Capitol.wa.gov/tours. ?? #WAleg #SineDie #LegislativeSession #OlympiaWA #CapitolCampus

Governor Bob Ferguson appointed Matt Jones as interim director of DES in January. ?? Ferguson mentioned, “Matt’s experience will provide a steady hand while we continue our search for this important position.” Matt Jones began his career in public service over 18 years ago. From facilities management to the care and custody of the country’s largest Capitol Campus, he continues to focus on fostering strong partnerships and advancing strategic initiatives within DES’ diverse portfolio of services. “I’m honored Gov. Ferguson trusts me with this responsibility to steer DES in support of his administration. I’ve seen firsthand how our services help other state agencies and governments across the state that ultimately provide value to Washingtonians – I’m excited for DES to lead by example and take action to ensure efficient and effective use of Washington state resources."
