For patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), an early stage of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), monitoring the risk of progressing to AD over time is crucial. Recent research in JAMIA Open introduces HiMAL (Hierarchical Multi-task Auxiliary Learning), a deep learning framework designed to address this need.? ? Led by Sayantan Kumar, PhD Candidate, Thomas Kannampallil, PhD, and Philip Payne, PhD, along with Sean Yu, PhD, and Andrew Michelson, MD, this study shows HiMAL's ability to predict whether an MCI patient will progress to AD within six months. These predictions are made at multiple points along the disease trajectory.? ? HiMAL also offers clinically informative explanations that anticipate cognitive decline six months in advance, providing valuable insights for clinicians to plan interventions. Built on routinely collected Electronic Health Records (EHR) data, HiMAL holds significant potential for point-of-care monitoring and management of high-risk AD patients, potentially revolutionizing clinical care.? ? ?? A new study in PLOS One, led by Sayantan Kumar, PhD Candidate, and Philip Payne, PhD, along with Inez Oh, PhD, Suzanne Schindler, MD, PhD, Nupur Ghoshal, MD, PhD, and Zachary Abrams, PhD, uses machine learning to identify dementia subtypes. By analyzing changes in cognitive abilities over time, the team found that very mild or mild dementia patients exhibit the most variability in symptoms and progression risk.? ? This approach utilizes accessible cognitive assessment scores, avoiding the high costs of MRI and PET scans, and marks significant progress in understanding cognitive heterogeneity in dementia.? ?
