Yesterday, we – along with our medical provider, NaphCare, Inc. – were awarded the Pinnacle Award from the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare (NCCHC) for our commitment to providing quality health care within our detention facility. This award, the highest distinction in correctional health care, is only the third Pinnacle ever awarded in the nation! “It is an incredible honor to receive the National Commission on Correctional Health Care’s Pinnacle Award – and the third one ever granted in the nation,” Sheriff Darin Balaam said. “The Sheriff’s Office places a high priority on the care of inmates in our custody. From mental health care to opioid treatment programs and Medication Assisted Treatment, the Sheriff’s Office has worked with our medical provider NaphCare to radically change the delivery of health care to those in our custody. Being recognized for the hard work our deputies, our civilian staff and our medical provider have put into improving outcomes for inmates is an exceptional moment and one which we will use to rededicate ourselves to continuing to provide the highest level of medical care to those in our custody.” The award recognizes our accreditation across three areas, including jail health services, mental health services, and opioid treatment programs. NCCHC accreditation signifies compliance with the highest recognized standards of care in each category. We love being partners with Special Olympics Nevada and sharing such great news!

We invited members of the media to the Regional Public Safety Training Center yesterday for a hands-on demonstration of one of our latest training tools. The Axon Virtual Reality Simulator places deputies in real-world scenarios where they learn to interact and serve various populations of the community. Some examples include interacting with people who are hard of hearing, people with mental health issues, or those who are English language learners. These scenarios place participants on both sides of the interaction, fostering greater understanding and empathy. Immediate feedback is provided after each scenario, enhancing the learning experience. Additionally, the headpiece streams to a smart TV, allowing trainers and observers to see what the trainee is experiencing. Instructors can make real-time adjustments based on the trainee’s performance, either increasing the difficulty or slowing things down as needed. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is excited to incorporate this new technology into the training of our deputies. It is efforts like this that allow us to constantly evolve the way we serve the diverse needs of our community. Does Santa Claus drive a boat? He does when it’s Marine 9 and the Sheriff comes to town! Camp Richardson gave us the chance to have Christmas in July a little early. With help from TAHOE FAMILY SOLUTIONS, Sheriff Balaam, Chief Deputy Mosley, and Deputies Jeter and Arneson delivered backpacks filled with school supplies to campers. Each year, Tahoe Family Solutions hosts a camping program that allows kids the opportunity to explore the incredible Sierras where we live. We are so incredibly proud of our Child and Family Research Center's Home Visiting Team and the work they are doing to support incarcerated individuals who are pregnant or have a child under the age of five.
