Thank you to Marie Gillemot, Tom Hall, Bill Johnson, and the GEORGE W GILLEMOT FOUNDATION for their generous donation of over $1 million to the Washoe County School District for the development of an Aviation Academy at the Academy of Arts, Careers and Technology. Also, thank you to Joshua Taufa Hartzog, Ph.D., Mike Gifford, Jason Mattick, Adam Mayberry, and Dawit Hadgu for championing this project. The establishment of the Aviation Academy offers high school students a unique opportunity to gain specialized knowledge and skills in aviation, preparing them for high-demand careers in fields such as piloting, aerospace engineering, air traffic control, and aviation maintenance. By participating in this academy, students can earn valuable certifications and hands-on experience that can lead directly into aviation careers or further educational opportunities. Additionally, students in the program will have a pathway to continue their studies at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC), which will offer aviation-focused courses and degree programs. From there, they can pursue advanced degrees at the University of Nevada, Reno, leveraging partnerships with local and regional aviation industries like Great Basin Aviation, Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority, Reno Stead Airport, and the Aviation Institute of Maintenance to further their careers. This initiative not only helps address the growing need for skilled professionals in aviation but also empowers students with a clear trajectory from high school to higher education and long-term career success.
