Over the years, we heard a variety?of challenges and feedback about the DSHS logo, mission, vision, and values. As we looked more closely, we realized many of the words and visuals we used were out of step?with how many people?describe DSHS services and themselves. Using a human-centered design process, we engaged thousands of clients, community partners, tribal governments, and staff to guide us in what was working well and what needed improvement. More than 4,000 people participated in surveys and hundreds participated in interviews and focus groups to brainstorm ideas.? To keep costs low, we did all the internal research, development, and design work through our full-time communications staff as part of their regular duties. DSHS will begin updating our digital materials and website with the updated brand. Building signage will be updated over multiple years along our typical maintenance schedule. Printed materials will be updated over one to two years as typical reordering is needed. Thank you to everyone who contributed their valuable insights! Learn more about this exciting process. Money Follows the Person Tribal Initiative (MFPTI) is a part of the larger Centers for Medicare and Medicaid funded Money Follows the Person Rebalancing Demonstration. --White is north, it is the image of a buffalo photographed in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. --Red is south, an image of a bird of prey, often depicted in the art, songs and oral histories of Native Americans including those of the south and southwest. --Yellow is east, an image of a loon and is a clan symbol for the Ojibwe people who have tribes in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. --Black is west, the image of a salmon which is often found in northwest tribal art. With nearly 13% of the population identifying as having a disability — it is critical that we ensure equal access to all Washington State citizens. Several DSHS Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) staff attended and presented at the “Accessibility Matters” conference, put on by the Information Professional Management Association (IPMA) The two-day conference was held in person and online at Saint Martin's University in Lacey on October 8 and 9, 2024. Topics covered at the event included: ~How the changes to Title II of the ADA will impact State and Local government agencies. ~WaTech Accessibility Policy 188 Updates and strategies on how to become compliant. ~Why accessibility should matter to you and how you can create a more accessible environment in your government agency. DVR staff presented on case management and the DVR's business unit presented on reasonable accommodations. State employees from around Washington gained new insights from subject matter experts in human centered design, contracts, accessibility myths, and more to better serve customers, staff, and the general public.
