The company’s focus is transferring waste from aging single-shell tanks into newer double-shell tanks where it will be stored until it is prepared for disposal. WRPS’ commitment includes doing the job safely with a strong focus on innovation, employee involvement and environmental protection. WRPS is a limited liability corporation (LLC) owned by AECOM and Atkins, with AREVA as its primary subcontractor. This partnership brings decades of experience to the job, which is considered one of the most complex cleanup projects in the nation. WRPS is committed to supporting programs and projects that advance educational and economic development opportunities in the region as well as those that enhance the quality of life. The future of the Tri-Cities area is bright, and WRPS is excited to be involved and help it grow to realize its full potential.

New technology shows promise in reducing working exposure at the Hanford Site. It’s called RadSat II, and it allows technicians to remotely monitor radiological levels during processing of radiological and chemical tank waste. It replaces a monitoring system that was obsolete and eliminates the need for workers to enter the processing area to measure dose rates using hand-held instruments.?

There’s no time for downtime! The 242-A Evaporator at the Hanford Site is getting some upgrades and preventative maintenance. Meanwhile, shift operators are taking part in a series of trainings to familiarize them with the full scope of what the plant does, the responsibilities each shift has, and any changes that might have been made from previous Evaporator campaigns.

A group of engineers from WRPS recently attended last month’s Society of Women Engineers annual conference, “WE24: Together We Rise.” This year’s conference was held in Chicago. The three-day event provides women in engineering and technology fields to network, learn about new industry trends, and cultivate leadership skills. The One Hanford contractors, along with the Department of Energy, participated in a career fair, sharing career opportunities available at the Hanford Site. Thanks to WRPS engineers who attended, including Nikki Huntington, Brittney Atterbury, and Jenny Kadinger.?

The Hanford Site’s underground waste-storage tanks are rather dark, but we’ve got work to do! Our Chief Technology Office is working with vendors to improve our ability to see inside and inspect difficult-to-reach areas of the tanks. One recent project is developing a new technology that produces more light with less heat. Too much heat can slow retrieval and tank inspection operations. The prototype package includes high-efficiency, high-output white LED lights on a fixture designed to help cool the lights quickly during and after operation. Meanwhile, work on a visual inspection camera system could help our Tank and Pipeline Integrity group more easily inspect the space between the primary and secondary walls of double-shell tanks. It’s all part of improving efficiency and effectiveness!

The National Safety Council recently recognized Katie Karch with its Rising Star of Safety award. The award recognizes safety professionals under 40 who show dedication to safety leadership at work. Karch, a senior industrial hygienist for WRPS, led a collaborative effort with WRPS Industrial Safety, Engineering, Operations, the workforce, and Department of Energy to draft a written program describing the protection measures in place for hazardous tank waste chemical vapors. Congratulations, Katie!
