For 17 years, Washington River Protection Solutions has been the Hanford Site's tank operations contractor. As the contract comes to an end, we reflect on the people who made it possible to complete so many environmental risk reduction projects over the years.

We’re celebrating 17 years of partnering with United Way of Benton and Franklin Counties.?? Since 2008, WRPS has donated $4,378,563 to UWBFCO through combined employee and corporate contributions. The funds support United Way initiatives in addition to community grants for local nonprofits.

WRPS Chief Technology Office's mechanical engineer Josue Estrada spent some time with local First Lego League team members, showing them ways to improve the programming code for their competition robot. The team from Rosalind Franklin STEM Elementary competed in a local tournament in December and is preparing for the state tournament in Spokane. The robot is scored by the number of tasks it completes, and Estrada worked with the students to improve their score.

A team of Washington State University students tested a prototype Alternative Core Sampler at the Cold Test Facility. The project is part of a collaboration in which WRPS sponsors senior level “capstone” courses, allowing students to use what they’ve learned to help solve real-world problems outside of the classroom. The tool shows promise and will see continued development through the partnership, giving up-and-coming professionals a unique opportunity to gain experience and familiarity with the Hanford Site mission!

Nathan Gallegos, a WRPS operations engineer, was driving along I-84 when a semitruck swerved on an overpass. It smashed through the guard rail and fell partly onto the highway below. The trailer was loaded with dirt and gravel, which spilled down into the cab of the truck. Recognizing that the driver was in danger of suffocating, Gallegos and a handful of other motorists dug through the rubble with their bare hands to carve out space for him to breath. The group continued rendering aid and stabilizing the man in place until emergency responders arrived. WRPS Environment, Safety, Health & Quality Manager Steve Killoy presented Nathan with a President’s Life Saving Award in recognition of his care, courage, and willingness to act. Kudos to Nathan for exemplifying the very best of our safety culture both on- and off- the clock!
