Today, CDA Executive Director Melissa Taphorn testified before the Senate Committee on Housing and Homelessness Prevention. Bill SF1913, authored by Senator Liz Boldon, is aimed at establishing a locally controlled housing fund. This would be a powerful tool enabling municipalities, tribal governments and housing corporations, community land trusts, and local housing authorities to create and preserve housing that is permanently affordable, self-sustaining, and affordable. All this is urgently needed in communities across Minnesota. Washington County CDA Executive Director Melissa Taphorn and Washington County CDA Deputy Executive Director Karly Schoeman were joined by Minnesota Housing Commissioner Jennifer Ho and Washington County Commissioner Stan Karwoski for an in-depth look at local economic and affordable housing trends. The presenters detailed the CDA’s 40+ programs that improve the lives of county residents and businesses of all sizes. The CDA is a leader in the effort for housing affordability through growth, preservation, and stabilization, leading to better educational, economic, health, and environmental outcomes. The CDA is also supporting economic development by offering business consultation services and teaming with local chambers of commerce and the county’s Workforce Development Division. Supporting $100 million in General Obligation Bonds to be allocated for the rehabilitation of public housing. This critical investment will: ? The CDA’s Executive Director Melissa Taphorn was a panelist for the State of the Market discussion at the 11th Annual Affordable Housing Summit in Golden Valley, MN, organized by Minnesota Real Estate Journal. The panelists and attendees came from communities across the Metro to collaborate and foster solutions for the urgent need for affordable housing in the Twin Cities. Our Board of Commissioners and staff got to dig some dirt on Tuesday, November 12, at the groundbreaking of the Emergency Housing Services Building! To be located on the Washington County Government Center grounds, the building will provide a safe and dignified home for single adults without minor children for up to 90 days while they work on getting more permanent housing.
