  • WABS presents your Weekly Market Updates: Visa has made a strategic investment in Nigerian fintech Moniepoint, a leading payment platform processing over 1 billion transactions monthly, with a total payment volume exceeding $22 billion. This partnership aims to accelerate financial inclusion by equipping small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Africa with improved access to digital payment solutions, fostering innovation in the region. Backed by $20 billion in sovereign bonds, the African Development Bank is set to finalise the African Financial Stability Mechanism to safeguard economies against debt crises. The facility will provide liquidity support, refinancing options, and macroeconomic stabilisation funds, mitigating financial vulnerabilities across the continent. LemFi has acquired the Irish currency exchange platform Bureau Buttercrane, securing a European license to streamline remittance services for Africans abroad. This acquisition strengthens LemFi’s position in Africa’s $100+ billion remittance market, enabling seamless money transfers from Europe to key destinations such as Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya. By expanding its cross-border payment capabilities, LemFi aims to simplify transactions and improve financial access for Africa’s global diaspora. This landmark achievement highlights the company’s rapid growth since its 2018 launch, standing out in a sector that has seen subdued activity in recent years. Naked aims to revolutionise the insurance industry by processing all sales without human intervention—a feature that sets it apart from traditional South African insurance providers. C?te d’Ivoire is on track to further reduce its fiscal deficit this year, reflecting the success of reforms aimed at boosting domestic revenues and improving public spending efficiency. The IMF projects that the fiscal deficit will fall to 3% of GDP in 2025, down from 4% last year, 5.2% in 2023, and 6.8% in 2022. These fiscal improvements are expected to foster a more stable economic environment in C?te d’Ivoire, driving foreign investment growth and business activity.   • WABS presents your Weekly Market Updates: Nigerian billionaire Bayo Ogunlesi, a senior managing director at BlackRock, whose company, Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) was acquired for $12.5 billion, is set to bring extensive experience in infrastructure investment and global market strategy to OpenAI’s 2025 outlook. Italy and Tunisia finalised the two year deal on the 16th January with Italy pledging €400 million to support development initiatives focused on energy transition and the advancement of renewable energy sources. This commitment marks a significant increase, doubling Italy’s previous financial engagement from the 2021-2023 agreement. BRICS was initially established in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2010, as a counterbalance to the G7 leading industrialized nations. With Nigeria being Africa’s largest economy, this partnership is intended to bolster BRICS’ influence on global economic policies and create new trade opportunities. The Gulf Countries become Africa's biggest investors, with Emerati businesses investing a total of $110 billion over the last four years, with $72bn being focused on renewable energy. UAE investments more than doubled that of those from the UK, France or China, as African leaders have welcomed the UAEs financial interest, particularly for green energy and infrastructure. ? Nigeria and the United states reach agreement to repatriate approximately $52.88 million in assets forfeited by former Nigerian oil minister Diezani Alison-Madueke bolstering supplies of scarce Forex reserves. Lateef Fagbemi, attorney-general of the federation and minister of justice, confirmed this at a formal signing ceremony between the two nations, stating that $50 million of the recovered assets would be allocated through the World Bank to fund rural electrification projects, while the remaining $2 million would be utilised by the International Institute of Justice to support anti-corruption initiatives. ? African Speciality Risk (ASR) has announced the launch of the first African focused Lloyd’s partnership, ‘Baobab’, which will offer up to $21 million in insurance capacity, across sectors including property, energy and liability. The Baobab partnership began operations on January 1st aiming to expand Lloyd’s 2% African market share through regional expertise and robust distribution methods. ASR has already de-risked $28 billion in assets across 63 African nations and holds plans to add more partners across the region in 2025.
