“I saw many places that could scare me still by their bare nakedness. Seeing the terrain did not bring back the fight. That had never gone away. But it helped a little, as always, to purge some things that happen on earth to see how little difference it has made to the dry hills that once were all-important to you.” Ernest Hemingway reflects on his memories of the Spanish Civil War after returning to Spain in the 1950s, following stints as a writer and news correspondent in the 1920s and 1930s. The conflict, which served as a prelude to World War II and highlighted the rise of fascism across Europe, ended in a victory for right-wing Nationalists, led by Francisco Franco, on this day in 1939.

“I was shot down by machine gun fire from the ground, the bullets piercing both petrol tanks and the instrument board. I crashed the machine about 200 yards north of the railway line and after firing a green light I ran towards a farm house about 100 yards away. I managed to elude several Germans who were chasing me, by doubling round the back of the farm house instead of going down a sunken road, which my pursuers appeared to do.” Francis Ryan Smith, the 13th-highest scoring Australian ace of World War I, recalls evading capture after being down during the final 48 hours of the war during a low-level bombing raid in Belgium. Smith was part of the legendary No 2 Squadron, the most decorated squadron in the Royal Australian Air Force, which was formally created after the war on this day in 1921.
