What wonder if officials and people say that England is wilfully working out China's ruin, and has no real friendly feeling for her.” A Chinese government official speaks on England’s purported unwillingness to comply with the treaty terms settled at the conclusion of the Second Opium War, which began on this day in 1857. China’s loss in the Second Opium War, a part of its "Century of Humiliation," forced them to pay war reparations, cede territories, and legalize the opium trade.
