It was a pleasure to be part of the High School STEM Day last month. We welcomed over 80 students through our doors at the Joint BioEnergy Institute, Agile BioFoundry, and Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU) to demonstrate what a STEM career is like. It was especially wonderful to welcome back former #JBEI intern, now high school teacher, Mers Tran. When asked about Berkeley Lab’s impact, we often point to our Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU), a scale-up facility helping turn lab breakthroughs in biofuels, biomaterials, and biochemicals into commercial reality. With a modest $3M annual budget, a team of 30, and a potential market impact exceeding $2 billion, ABPDU’s reputation reaches across the Atlantic. Today we are very pleased to announce alignment with the U.S. FDA on an Accelerated Approval pathway for our ST-920 gene therapy product candidate for the treatment of Fabry disease, accelerating estimated time to potential approval by approximately three years. ? The FDA confirmed that estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) slope data at one year across all Phase 1/2 patients can serve as the primary basis for approval under the Accelerated Approval Program. This approach unlocks a potential Biologics License Application (BLA) submission in the second half of 2025, and avoids the need for an additional registrational study to establish clinical efficacy. We are delighted to have a regulatory pathway that could bring this treatment to patients significantly sooner than originally anticipated.
