W&A recently participated in three sessions at the UGA Landscape Architecture Short Course. Buck Bacon (Athens) participated in a panel discussion about the Redevelopment Master Plan for Bethel Village in North Downtown Athens. The following morning, Curt Jackson (Atlanta) led a session about Designing Green Roofs. That afternoon Scott Haines and Buck Bacon led a session on the Southern Mill Redevelopment project including a tour of the campus. Special thanks to Professor Donnie Longenecker, University of Georgia - College of Environment + Design, for the opportunity to take part in the continuing education of our fellow professional Landscape Architects.

On Thursday, February 13th, we welcomed students from Putnam County High School’s Service Leadership Program to our Athens office for a Career Exploration Day! These future leaders got an inside look at who we are, what we do, and how personal values shape a successful career. Our theme for the day? The Heart of Success: Values That Matter Through personal career stories, we showed how aligning values with professional goals can serve as a career GPS toward meaningful success. We hope to continue inspiring these talented students!

The View at NoDa is transforming Downtown Athens, Ga! W&A, in partnership with the Athens Housing Authority, Columbia Residential, Johnathon Rose Companies, and the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government are enjoying the view of the new Wetland Park. W&A partnered with Dix-Hite Partners to design this one-of-a-kind stormwater management facility and constructed wetlands that also serves as an engaging park for the community and its residents. W&A is excited to see the Fairview Street Affordable Housing Project come out of the ground in Athens, Ga! Framing ... done! Plumbing and electrical ... roughed in! W&A’s Government and Community Services Department is managing this project on behalf of the East Athens Development Corporation, a nonprofit organization focused on improving the Athens community. Many thanks to J.W. York Homes for the quality construction work! The project is funded through an ARPA grant. This year marked Better Community Collaborative's 6th year of participating in the Athens MLK Day of Service, and what an impactful day it was! Our team joined volunteers from across Athens-Clarke County to give back and honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy of service. Together, we supported three amazing projects hosted by local organizations: Athens Community Council on Aging Our volunteers worked in the ACCA Community Garden, prepping for spring by weeding, mulching, and preparing beds. Burks Elementary School We partnered with the Burks PTO Garden Committee to rebuild their school vegetable garden. Volunteers assembled and filled raised garden beds, and even had the chance to construct a "Pea Teepee" using bamboo harvested on-site! Food Bank of Northeast Georgia Ten of our team members helped pack an incredible 9,000 lbs. of food to be distributed to seniors in need across the Food Bank's 15-county service region. The Athens MLK Day of Service, part of a nationwide effort inspired by Dr. King's call to service, brings together 30+ organizations, schools, and agencies to make it "A Day On, Not a Day Off." We’re so proud to be part of this annual tradition, making a difference alongside so many dedicated community members.

Holiday cheer is in full swing at W&A Engineering! Each of our offices celebrated the season with joy, laughter, and great company. As we wrap up 2024, we want to wish all of our clients, partners, and friends a very Happy Holiday season! Thank you for being a part of our journey this year. We look forward to building better communities with you in 2025!

Better Communities Collaborative’s 4th quarter Community Impact Event is an Annual Holiday Food Drive, and 2024 marked 3 years. All of BCC’s Impact Centers participated this year and collected a total of 1850 non-perishable food items for local nonprofits. Nashville won the inter-office challenge with an average donation of 43 items/employee, and Atlanta placed second with 18 items/employee. The recipient organizations were Athens Area Emergency Food Bank, Golden Harvest Food Bank (Atlanta/Augusta), Angels & Sparrows (Charlotte), NE Georgia Homeless Veterans Shelter (@groundhawk), and Samaritan Soup Kitchen (Nashville).
