These stories could include mobile stories, videos, podcasts, articles, investigative reports, or personal narratives—providing a platform to document displacement, the effects of war on marginalized groups, the impact on health and education, or the broader consequences of the conflict on women, children, and civilians. It was a heartfelt exchange of experiences and knowledge???? #Journalists from the West Bank, Gaza, and those displaced in Egypt joined us—some for the very first time since the start of the war on Gaza. We WIN, together ?
On the eve of our 15th year in the pursuit of greater equality and inclusion in media, the fantastic WAN-IFRA WIN team came together to reflect on our progress, and set priorities for 2025 and beyond. I'm incredibly proud of what we've achieved together. Here are some highlights: - More than 1,200 editors, journalists and media managers have progressed through our signature Leadership Accelerator capacity building programme. - Career Progression: 1 in 3 participants report a promotion or lateral move of their choosing within 3 months of completing the programme — and this rises to an impressive 90% within a year. - Fair pay: Every promotion has been matched with a salary increase. - Reducing the brain drain: 85% of Alums remain in the media sector 3–5 years after engaging with WIN, and 70% stay connected with peers beyond the programme. Broader Impact Since 2015 (when we started properly tracking our data): - We have trained 7,275 media professionals from 1,243 media across 20 countries on topics like gender balance, inclusive leadership, and managing sexual and online harassment. - Our efforts are shifting mindsets: Audiences report greater awareness of unconscious bias, while staff and collaborators feel safer in their newsrooms. - Our Social Impact Reporting Initiative (SIRI) has supported small grants and reporting assignments, leading to more stories by and about marginalized and at-risk communities, highlighting important yet often underreported issues. Yet, significant challenges remain: - Over five years of tracking gender balance in content across 60+ outlets shows no measurable improvement, reflecting a global trend where women appear as contributors, experts, or protagonists in just 1 in 4 stories. - The proportion of women in top editorial positions has remained stuck at 30% for three consecutive years, while those holding the top commercial roles in media have seen only a slight increase, rising from 13% to 16%. Why this matters: In a time of economic crises, declining trust, and rampant misinformation, equality and inclusion are not just moral imperatives—they are strategic necessities. These values unlock access to new audiences, revenue streams, and build trust with readers. As we approach 2025, we remain committed to this mission. But we can’t do it alone. We call on the industry to recognize that sustainability and credibility depend on equality and inclusion. This journey is only possible thanks to an exceptional team from 21+ countries and the generous support of Sweden (Sida)? and Norway (Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation). Together, we’ll keep making progress—step by step. WIN, together. WAN-IFRA, the World Association of News Publishers #GenderBalance #WomenInMedia #LeadershipEquality #Equality #BreakingBarriers
