Nonprofit workers are essential partners to philanthropy. Let’s treat them like we want them to succeed in fulfilling their missions.
A new report by Independent Sector is shedding light on the financial wellbeing for millions of nonprofit workers in the U.S., and it’s a sobering view. It’s not the world we want or are fighting for. https://lnkd.in/gTg-UVqM While the report reveals hardship, it also highlights opportunities for change. Let’s turn these data into action. At Hub ONE, our journey is in progress, which you can read about in our case study: https://lnkd.in/e_nc5M8x Progress is possible – let’s work for it! #Nonprofit #PayEquity

The Walter & Elise Haas Fund posted a new blog, a call to action to funders to fund nonprofit workers' resilience. As Jamie Allison asks: Funders, let's ask ourselves: Are we funding sustainability and capacity for nonprofit teams? Are we creating space for rest, reflection, and joy in our grants? How can we center nonprofit leaders as we invest in social change? This is a call to action. As a proud PEAK Grantmaking member, it was special to have Walter & Elise Haas Fund executive director Jamie Allison featured in your most recent publication. Thank you, Satonya Fair, JD, for your leadership and for recognizing Jamie.
Former PEAK board member and operations mastermind Suki O'Kane sent me a note when Jamie Allison arrived at the Walter & Elise Haas Fund sharing her excitement and suggesting that Jamie and I might be kindred spirits. Suki was right and it's been a professional blessing to get to know Jamie and to observe the shifts at the Fund under a collective leadership model she is actively stewarding. We agree that the people do the work and that pouring into our teams is paramount to being an effective leader and leading effectively. Speaking with her for this piece was refreshing and revolutionary in all the right ways, and I hope you find it inspiring, too.

Dawn Wolfe and Inside Philanthropy, thank you for keeping the nonprofit workforce front and center. At the Walter & Elise Haas Fund, as a philanthropic organization, we understand that our work depends on the well-being of nonprofit workers, and maximize our funding to organizations to support family-sustaining wages, necessary benefits, worker protections, and advancement opportunities. We invite our funding peers to support their partners in winning for their missions, including valuing the leaders doing the work.
For Inside Philanthropy, here's a look at data from the new Independent Sector/#UnitedforALICE report, an August survey from the Federal Reserve Board, and of course a look back to the work done last year by the National Council of Nonprofits on the #nonprofithiringcrisis. Taken together, these reports paint a troubling picture of the ongoing struggles of nonprofit workers in the face of substandard wages -- and how the resulting hiring issues are damaging nonprofits. From the piece: "Given their size relative to the U.S. government’s, funders could argue that they don’t have that large a role to play in shaping salary levels and capacity in the nonprofit sector. And as the Independent Sector/ALICE report itself shows, nonprofit workers are hardly unique in receiving below-living wages, and are even in better shape than self-employed and the lowest-paid for-profit sector workers. Why should nonprofit worker pay be prioritized? These arguments have merit on their face. They also strike me as cop-outs. Whether or not individual funders’ missions include fighting poverty or boosting working conditions including pay, the facts remain: Nonprofits are struggling to hire and retain workers. That struggle is impacting their missions. Lack of funding, which contributes to below-living-standard wages and overwork, thanks to understaffing, is a key factor determining how many staff nonprofits can hire and how long they can retain them. The equation is a simple one: No people equals no programs." #philanthropy Jamie Allison Rick Cohen Nina Ford Dr. Akilah Watkins Christine Aromando Fund the People Crappy Funding Practices

Sometimes we talk about closing the racial and gender wealth gap. Sometimes we talk about trust-based philanthropy. Sometimes we talk about nonprofit worker well-being. Today, we're talking about hanging folders. We're a hybrid office with over 12 feet of hanging folders from the beforetime. Do you want them? Do you know where we should donate them? And yes, we'll be posting next about paperclips.
