Exciting news for Heartwood Biomass!
“The August air is heavy with the scent of a nearby wildfire as a truck hauling 20 tons of wood pulls into the Heartwood Biomass Inc. facility in Jamestown, California… It’s a small, simple business aimed at a big, complicated problem: the dangerously overgrown forests of the US West.” Heartwood welcomes Bloomberg’s media coverage of our expansion from our founding location in rural Northeast Oregon to now shipping our first products from our new facility in California’s Sierra foothills. We are especially excited to see recognition go to Sierra Resource Management who Heartwood sees as best in class as a logger and partner on the ground in this critical restoration effort. https://lnkd.in/gXqnkukx

DARS has made some serious advances in research and development of future services to the Forestry sector. This past week and weekend we’ve been flying our new UAS (Mavic 3 Enterprise) in NE Oregon, to gather imagery in mixed conifer/ponderosa pine dominated forests. If you want to see where we are heading, check out this publication. https://lnkd.in/guvuHbw7 Oregon State University Forestry extension foresters, John Punches and Jacob Putney, CF provided us access to the “Obie” research forest near Elgin, OR https://lnkd.in/gtMXcjZ7 And Jacob Putney, CF also introduced us to John and Cheryl Peel, forest landowners near Wallowa, Oregon. Who invited us to fly their property to provide a demonstration for the Northeast Oregon Small Woodland Association. We met a lot of enthusiastic forest landowners as well as numerous agency staff from Oregon Department of Forestry Wallowa Resources Oregon State University Forestry Extension.

Photo 1: last week, Pacific Northwest land trusts and other community forest practitioners touring the community forest and rangeland of Wallowa Lake's iconic East Moraine (one of the world's best examples of a glacial moraine formed some 9 million years ago). We learned about the upcoming trials of geofencing cattle for rotational grazing focused on native perennial vegetation health (using vence corp tech) along the rim of this ancient 5-mile long lake, while eliminating physical fences in a high-traffic wildlife corridor and popular recreation spot for my fellow community members. Excited to follow the progress of trialing GPS-enabled collars that allow dynamic herd tracking and rotating virtual paddocks vs. putting up ~$20K/linear mile of barbed or electric wire. Shout out to Wallowa Resources and others for both protecting this breathtaking place and exploring new innovations to restore land and community health. Photo 2: an original print of the same location 60 years ago that hangs in my office as a reminder of important 'working lands' that we can learn from, protect, and restore.

"With a long family history of farming in rural communities, Nils Christoffersen, a member of USDA’s?Equity Commission?Rural Community Economic Development Subcommittee, was inspired to learn about the challenges impacting rural America. Christoffersen’s desire to bring attention to the needs, opportunities, and challenges faced by rural and Tribal communities grew from participating in farming and enjoying the experiences of farm life." https://lnkd.in/gg8WvzRS
