A former car lot in an unincorporated Alameda neighborhood has been reborn as Ashland Zocalo, a one-acre park where community input shaped everything from its safe play areas to its drought-resistant gardens. It's been an honor to organize this New Voices Partnership cohort to bring underrepresented voices into a park planning process for the East Bay Regional Park District—with a focus on long-term leadership development. Working with WRT Planning + Design and the great EBRPD staff, I recruited participants from organizations including Latino Outdoors, RICH CITY Rides, the Original Scraper Bike Team, YES Nature to Neighborhoods, Oakland Goes Outdoors (Oakland Unified School District), BORP Adaptive Sports, J-SEI-INC senior services, Kala Art Institute and more, plus community members representing folks interested in public health, mental health, diverse gender identities, and people with disabilities. Organizations already active in park planning such as Friends of Five Creeks and Golden Gate Bird Alliance also sent participants who could speak to their lived experiences as people of color seeking access to nature. In a field trip and capacity-building workshops, we explored and developed ideas for the site known as the North Basin Strip—an undeveloped portion of the McLaughlin Eastshore State Park in Berkeley—and built knowledge about the environmental, design, regulatory, political, legal, and financial aspects of making parks. Big shoutout to brand-new EBRPD deputy general manager Max Korten for making time to hear the final presentations by participants, and to Jose Gonzalez, M.S, EBRPD equity officer, for coming and inspiring us all. The cohort was brimming with energy, expertise, and a deep understanding of community needs. Kudos to the group, including the lively members in their early twenties, for bringing fresh ideas and perspectives to park planning. We look forward to continuing to hear from you throughout the process for planning this park. Coinciding with #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth, Pennrose & Family of Woodstock, Inc. are proud to announce that construction is underway at Golden Hill Apartments in Kingston, NY. The $87 million redevelopment will transform a former jail site into a 164-unit, mixed-use, energy-efficient community. With two mid-rise apartment buildings, four townhomes, and a central community building, Golden Hill will provide much-needed housing and on-site social services for families, seniors, and vulnerable communities, including households impacted by homelessness and domestic violence. We are excited to collaborate with some of the most talented firms in the fields of economics, engineering, mobility, architecture, and urban design as we shape the future of Downtown Redwood City. Redwood City has achieved exceptional Downtown growth in the last decade, surpassing many other Bay Area cities in integrating residential density and major employers in and around the Downtown Area. This project presents an exciting opportunity to develop a cohesive, long-term vision for a livable, resilient, and thriving Downtown.
