Thank you NYU MPH students Rimsha Minhaz and Loren Gant for helping to pilot WD-Home, the only app in assisted living built to decrease caregiver burnout and prevent older person 911 calls. Rimsha and Loren never complained when for three days they worked alongside caregivers helping to feed, clean and entertain residents in a 22-bed dementia unit as the way of encouraging and understanding rapid meaningful electronic charting of older person care. While I am proud that no similar app exists, I am just as proud that no similar students and persons exist. This morning I fed a 99 year old lady her entire breakfast. I had never done that. I noticed that she wasn’t eating anything. With me she ate everything. But then she looked up at me and with intensity, paused and in rapid clear speech, uttered phrases that were incomprehensible. Over the day she started calling me mama. But it was impossible for me to respond well to that which I couldn't understand. How do we help while not patronizing adults who have spent the majority of vibrant lives active, independent, and otherwise? One answer is to immerse so as to not escape. Another answer is to act in community as if it is one's own family at stake Thanks to ALG Senior leadership and staff for allowing Walking Doctors to pilot WD-Home, an app for older persons with dementia in assisted living. #ALGsenior #AssistedLiving #Dementia #Caregivers #NYUSGPH #WDhome #QualityCareAnywhere
