Happy birthday to the original Walgreens pharmacist, our company founder Charles R. Walgreen Sr., who was born 151 years ago today! ?? In 1893, Charles came to Chicago and found a job at Samuel Rosenfeld’s drugstore at Quincy and Wells through a classified ad in the Chicago Tribune. Three years later he became a registered pharmacist by the Illinois State Board of Pharmacy. ?? In 1898, at the beginning of the Spanish-American War, he enlisted with the Illinois National Guard and went to Cuba. There, among other duties, he was put in charge of the dispensary. ???? In 1901, after returning to Chicago, he bought what would be the first Walgreens drugstore and put his name above the door: C.R. Walgreen, R. World Cerebral Palsy Day falls within the first week of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
