This week, Gonzalo Gebara wrapped up his 25-year career with Walmart after announcing his plans to return to Argentina to be with family. Gonzalo has worked in multiple Walmart markets throughout his career, but we were lucky enough to have him as our CEO in Canada for the past two years.? ? Gonzalo was a vocal and consistent champion of our associates throughout his time with Walmart Canada.?He always put our associates at the heart of everything we did as a company.? During his time at Walmart Canada, we invested billions of dollars in our stores and supply chain network across the country, strengthened our position as Canada’s largest omnichannel retailer, and invested in our associates through wage increases, leading benefit plans, and educational opportunities.? More than a third were sold on Feb. 12 – 13 alone, with an additional 15% sold on Feb. 14. ?? ? We see similar trends in chocolate. In the last two days before Valentine’s Day, we usually see a spike in chocolate sales. Of that, most of the sales are in boxed chocolate – a classic last-minute gifting purchase! ?? ? We were excited to welcome Venessa Yates to our head office in Mississauga last week for a town hall with some of our associates!?? Venessa, the incoming President and CEO of Walmart Canada, was joined on stage by outgoing President and CEO Gonzalo Gebara.?? During her talk with Gonzalo, Venessa said she’s impressed by the energy, passion, and pride she’s seen from our associates during some of her initial store visits over the past few weeks.??? She also spoke to Walmart’s recent $6.5 billion investment to grow our store and supply chain footprint in Canada, seeing it as a vote of confidence in our associates’ ability to serve our customers like no one else can.?? We also gave Venessa some key Canada essentials to welcome her, including a denim jacket, ketchup chips, and a cozy hat!?? We’re excited to share we’ve partnered with Toronto-area artist Kendal Blake to design reusable bags and t-shirts for Black History Month! The bags and t-shirts feature illustrations from Kendal titled “My Crown.” The title of the work speaks to how the people in the Black community often refer to their hair as their crown, Kendal says in her artist statement. The illustrations feature two different images of Black people and hairstyles: one with cornrows that pattern a crown, and one of an afro with a pick featuring a crown symbol. The sundial pattern in the illustrations contain afro picks from different moments in history, dating back 6,000 years. You can find these items in-store and on Walmart.ca.
