  • ? A Celebration of Hope and Resilience at Village Green ? One year ago, the residents of Village Green Apartments faced an unimaginable challenge when the catastrophic January 2024 floods forced many to leave their homes. But through it all, one thing remained unwavering—the strength of this community. At our Village Green Flood Anniversary Event, we gathered to honor the resilience of our residents and the incredible network of partners who made their journey back home possible. One resident, Maria G. shared a powerful reflection: "Looking back at everything that happened last year at Village Green, I’m most thankful for the strength and support of our community. Even in the midst of the flood and all the challenges that came with it, neighbors came together to help one another in ways that were truly inspiring. It reminded me how much kindness and resilience can shine through in hard times. I’m also grateful for the chance to come back home and start fresh—it’s something we don’t take for granted." This event was not just a milestone—it was a testament to the power of community, compassion, and perseverance. We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the organizations and individuals who stood with us, ensuring that displaced residents had the resources and support they needed: ?? Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera, J.D. and his team ?? Sharia's Closet ?? PHATCAMP San Diego ?? The Harvey Family Foundation ?? Copley-Price Family YMCA ?? ROLANDO COMMUNITY COUNCIL ?? Jackie Robinson Family YMCA ?? Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) ?? San Diego Housing Commission ?? County of San Diego and Equus ?? GEM Coffee ?? Allgire Foundation ?? Cavignac?Insurance ?? Plunkies Cheesecupcakery ?? Junior League of San Diego ?? Education Support Center ?? FEMA and SBA ?? American Red Cross Your dedication and generosity helped bring our Village Green families home, and for that, we are eternally grateful. This past year has been a journey of healing, rebuilding, and renewal—and it’s proof that when a community comes together, we can overcome anything. ???????? #Wakeland #WakelandHousing #AffordableHousing #SanDiego #TogetherWeThrive

  • Home for the Holidays: Welcoming Residents to The Shores at North Beach ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? This holiday season, Wakeland Housing and Development Corporation is overjoyed to celebrate the opening of The Shores at North Beach, a newly renovated supportive housing community in the heart of San Diego’s Ocean Beach neighborhood. Originally built in 1958, this thoughtfully transformed apartment complex now provides 13 affordable homes for formerly homeless individuals. Designed to foster a sense of community and belonging, the property features a central courtyard with lush planters, trees, and seating areas, as well as a fenced outdoor space for residents to relax. Onsite amenities include a laundry room, dedicated offices for property management and service providers, and parking spaces to support our residents' needs. To commemorate this milestone, we hosted a Thank You Happy Hour at the nearby Wonderland Ocean Pub, where we celebrated alongside our incredible partners and supporters. The food was delicious, the service outstanding, and the company truly inspiring. It was a heartwarming reminder of the collective effort and dedication that made this project possible. We are grateful for the incredible partnership and support of our funders, the California Department of Housing & Community Development, County of San Diego, The City of San Diego, and the San Diego Housing Commission. Also, special thanks to our dedicated development team: Allgire General Contractors, Yellow Giraffe Architects, and CONAM Management Corporation. As we reflect on the spirit of the season, we are reminded that having a safe, stable place to call home is the foundation of hope and renewal. To our new residents: welcome home. May this be the beginning of brighter days ahead. #Wakeland #WakelandHousing #SupportiveHousing #EndingHomelessness #SanDiegoCommunity #AffordableHousing

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, we’re proud to recognize our longtime partner, Rebecca Louie, President & CEO of Wakeland Housing and Development Corporation. Rebecca’s story is one of resilience, understanding, and a lifelong commitment to her Alaska Native (Tlingit/Aleut) roots, which guide her mission to create affordable housing that heals and uplifts. Reflecting on her childhood in Anchorage, Rebecca shares, “When I was growing up in Alaska in the 1970s and 80s, homelessness was almost synonymous with being Alaskan Native. While there wasn’t anywhere near the crisis of homelessness that there is today, the people who were there on the streets were almost unfailingly Native. The faces I saw on the sidewalks looked so much like my relatives, and I had several family members who were in and out of homelessness—including my favorite uncle, who was incredibly smart, kind, and successful. As a young person it was hard to understand and at times I even felt embarrassed by it, like there was something wrong with us.” Her perspective changed when she left Alaska to study Urban Studies and Planning at UC San Diego. There, she began to understand the systemic racism impacting Indigenous communities. “I learned about the boarding schools and generations of trauma they caused. I learned what happened to my uncle when he was forced to go to one, and suddenly everything made sense. I learned what it means to have your culture and land taken from you, and what that does to your soul. With each new understanding, my desire to be part of righting these wrongs grew.” This journey led Rebecca to Wakeland Housing, where, over the past 20 years, she has helped develop over 8,500 affordable homes, each paired with transformative services. “It’s challenging work, but for me and the rest of Wakeland’s employees, it’s worth it if we can help even one person like my uncle heal and thrive.” We at Century Housing are honored to collaborate with Rebecca and Wakeland in creating affordable homes for those in need. Thank you, Rebecca, for your dedication to creating housing that goes beyond shelter. Your story reminds us that affordable housing is essential to justice, healing, and a brighter future. #affordablehousing #housingdevelopment #CDFI #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth

  • Words From Rebecca Louie, Wakeland's President & CEO: This year marks Wakeland’s 25th Anniversary! When I was asked to write something commemorating our 25th year, I went through quite a few drafts figuring out what I wanted to say. I’ve had the amazing fortune of being at Wakeland for 20 of those years, so this anniversary is personal to me, and I’ve been giving a lot of thought to our journey as an organization. So, should I …. ?? Give a history of our growth from a start-up nonprofit to the affordable housing powerhouse we are today? ?? Talk about the ever-growing need for affordable housing? ?? Complain about the illogical and inefficient systems in which we develop affordable homes? (I had fun on that draft). But, when it came down to it, what I really want to say is THANK YOU! Thank you to our founders Steve Kuptz and Ken Sauder. Your vision led to the creation of over 8,500 affordable homes and your kind and people-centered leadership built the culture and values that guide us today. Thank you to our talented, hard-working, mission-driven staff. Your commitment has changed the world for the better and you prove daily that as a team we can do all things. Thank you to our Board of Directors past and present. We have had so many talented people giving their time and talents to guide and grow this organization. Thank you to our lenders and investors. Affordable housing is complicated and full of risk so having strong financial partners who have faith in us makes all the difference in the world. Thank you to the elected officials who understand the importance of affordable housing and who are willing to make difficult decisions to get it built in their communities. Thank you to the government staff we work with throughout the funding and development process. I complain about the government because…bureaucracy. But there are some amazing people working there, and in an understaffed and under-budgeted environment. I appreciate every one of you that has gone out on a limb to help us move our projects forward. Thank you to our architects, general contractors, engineers and all the rest of you that make sure what we build will still be standing 100 years from now. Thank you to our property management companies and staff who make sure our properties and residents are taken care of. You have the hardest jobs. Thank you to all of you who donate to our work, or who helped our residents after the recent floods. You are making a meaningful impact. Thank you to the affordable housing advocates out there fighting for the cause. It would nice if you didn’t have to given the obviousness of the crisis, but you do, and we appreciate you for it. And finally, thank you to our residents for serving as daily reminders of why we do what we do. Everyone deserves a safe and affordable place to live, and your stories and experiences push us to develop more homes for more people. And with that …. Here’s to 25 More Years!
