Waikiki Health’s CMO Honored: Congratulations?to Waikiki Health's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Elliot Kalauawa, who was honored this past weekend by Jarrett Middle School Foundation for being an "Extra Ordinary Palolo Pride" alumni. Dr Kalauawa, who has been providing medical and HIV specialty services at Waikiki Health for 38 years, was awarded the honorary award in front of a ballroom of over 100 guests in attendance, including dozens of Jarrett students. When “Dr. K,” as he is affectionately known by patients and staff alike, was a young boy living in Palolo public housing with his single mother on welfare, he experienced long waits to see a doctor at Queen Emma Clinic. He concluded there must be a shortage of doctors, which prompted him to become a doctor. Dr. K was selfless and compassionate – even at that young age. He knew he wanted to become a doctor, the kind of physician that would take care of the poor. Dr. K. received scholarships to attend Iolani High School and the University of Hawaii, where he earned his MD in Internal Medicine. Dr. Kalauawa was one of the few early Native Hawaiian physicians in the state. Alexis Charpentier, MPH, CEO of Waikiki Health said, "This recognition was unique because Dr. K came from this community, at Jarrett Middle School, and accomplished his goal of becoming a doctor that addressed more than just the medical, but social needs of his patients. Congratulations, Dr. K! We are so proud of you!"?
