We believe that designing for resilience requires Living with Water? and building with nature.
关于我们
Waggonner & Ball is a New Orleans-based architecture and environment firm, located where the Mississippi River meets the Gulf of Mexico. We see architecture as a way of understanding the world. Since 1970, Waggonner & Ball and its predecessor firm have lived and worked in New Orleans - a deeply rooted place with a rich history, but also a port city with a constant exchange of materials and culture. From this perspective, we see New Orleans - a challenging environment on the front line of climate change where a holistic approach to design is essential - as both our home and our point of departure. Our work spans a range of scales, from buildings to landscapes, from cities to watersheds. Our work also spans a range of places, from New Orleans to Norfolk, from Beijing to Jakarta. No matter where we work, we draw on the local and particular while engaging our global context of a changing climate, precarious economic conditions, and powerful new technologies. We work hard to align cutting-edge best practices with underlying deep structures of place. We collaborate with leading design and engineering firms around the globe to create plans and projects that are ambitious, detailed, and actionable. A broad international network of partners enriches and informs our practice on a daily basis. Utilizing a workshop-based design process, our collaborative approach synthesizes knowledge and insights from diverse stakeholders. Preference in our practice has been given to work that requires a long-term perspective, and we pride ourselves in maintaining a high rate of repeat clients.

Today, on World Architecture Day, Waggonner & Ball recognizes the essential role architecture plays in creating resilient and sustainable communities. This global day, founded by the UIA - International Union of Architects, reminds us of the power of innovative design and the invaluable contributions of emerging architects in urban development. We’re excited to introduce Mitchell Hubbell, an architect at Waggonner & Ball and a Gulf Coast native with experience in hurricane-resilient designs. Mitchell received his master’s degree from Tulane University, where his thesis earned him the prestigious Thomas J. Lupo Award for metropolitan studies and was published in the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture’s 2024 conference proceedings. Check out what Mitchell has to say about how architects are tackling today’s challenges and shaping the future! #WorldArchitectureDay #SustainableDesign #UrbanDevelopment #ResilientArchitecture

The Mandeville Parks and Recreation Master Plan continues to garner recognition as an AIA Louisiana Merit Award winner, following its selection as an AIA New Orleans Merit Award recipient. This comprehensive master plan aims to enhance Mandeville’s identity as a waterfront retreat by prioritizing a nature-based approach to park design. It proposes three signature parks that promote multimodal connectivity and ecological restoration, including a lakefront park featuring a living shoreline and a neighborhood stormwater park designed to mitigate flooding. The jury praised its innovative solutions and thoughtful integration of human and natural systems, highlighting the plan's commitment to resilience and community engagement.

This summer, Waggonner & Ball welcomed students from the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA)'s Project Pipeline to the Mirabeau Water Garden project, currently under construction, and to our office for a hands-on learning experience. The program, which introduces underrepresented students to design through a lens of design justice, aligns with our commitment to education and community engagement. On this World Environment Day, Waggonner & Ball celebrates the Mirabeau Water Garden project, an initiative to transform a 25-acre lot in the heart of New Orlean’s Fillmore neighborhood. Once completed, this innovative garden will be capable of holding up to 10 million gallons of rainwater through nature-based features such as a pond, wetlands, and vegetation. This project not only enhances the local environment but reduces flooding by capturing water that would otherwise inundate nearby streets. As a demonstration project, Mirabeau Water Garden will serve as a model for other open spaces and institutional sites throughout the city and region. It will be a living laboratory, acting as a recreational amenity, environmental education outpost, and test bed for water management best practices. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with interactive exhibits and learn about sustainable water management, local ecosystems, and climate resilience.
