Working to protect and improve the health of all people in Washington state.

关于我们

Washington State Department of Health (DOH) works with federal, state, tribal, and local partners to help people in Washington stay healthy and safe. Our programs and services help prevent illness and injury, promote healthy places to live and work, provide education to help people make good health decisions and ensure our state is prepared for emergencies. DOH is a great place to work and has implemented several “Employer of Choice” initiatives, including: ? We support a healthy work/life balance by offering flexible/alternative work schedules, and mobile and telework options. ? We are committed to diversity and inclusion. DOH fosters an inclusive environment that encourages all employees to bring their authentic selves to work each day. We strive to hire, develop, and retain a competent and diverse workforce that is reflective of the customers we serve. ? We have an engaging Wellness@Health program which offers programs that support healthy behaviors and work/life balance. Our program provides wellness education, access to healthy food, physical activity classes, stress relief, and many other resources to support a healthy you. ? We are making exciting steps towards modernizing our workplace by providing motivating and inspiring workspaces that promote creative thought, innovation, and collaboration among co-workers. ? We have an Infant at Work Program that is based on the long-term health values of breastfeeding newborns and infant-parent bonding. Eligible employees who are new mothers, fathers, or legal guardians can bring their infant (6 weeks to 6 months) when returning to work.

  • Jamilia Sherls, DNP, MPH, RN, CDP, CPN, Director of DOH’s Office of Immunization, was recently elected Secretary-Treasurer of the Association for Immunization Managers (AIM) for 2025. She will serve in this position until Dec. 31, 2025 (https://lnkd.in/gw6s_3u). AIM is dedicated to establishing a nation free of vaccine-preventable disease. The organization’s members are the leaders of state, local, and territorial immunization programs, directing the public health efforts designed to keep children and adults vaccinated and protected against disease. In her role at DOH, Dr. Sherls leads a team of close to 100 staff members who are dedicated to protecting Washingtonians from vaccine-preventable diseases by increasing access to immunizations through the Childhood Vaccine Program (https://lnkd.in/gYhXMZ_C) and Adult Vaccine Program (https://lnkd.in/gXMDBdHc) and addressing vaccine equity. Dr. Sherls and her staff collaborate with providers, local health jurisdictions, Tribal governments, insurers, schools, and community partners to implement evidence-based strategies designed to increase vaccine coverage rates, provide immunization education and trainings, support outbreak responses, and uphold school and childcare immunization requirements. • Last week we sent a small team to HIMSS24 where we highlighted our commitment to HealthIT innovation. We participated in several conversations about how the Department of Health is leveraging Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) to advance data exchange and modernize our public health infrastructure. This work builds on Washington's rich history of technological advancement, ensuring we're equipped to address complex health challenges in the future.

  • Can a popular sport contribute to PFAS in our drinking water? Take Claire's new PFAS pop quiz and find out! PFAS are a large family of human-made chemicals. They have been used since the 1950s to make a wide variety of stain-resistant, water-resistant, and non-stick consumer products. In humans, it can take many years for PFAS to leave our bodies. As a result, exposure to levels above recommended limits over time may lead to harmful health effects.

  • Exposure to extreme heat is a serious threat to population health and well-being. The Robert Bree Collaborative aims to address this threat and has identified five focus areas to guide evidence review and following workgroup discussions. These focus areas cover education, planning & preparedness, equity, incentives and investments, and tracking and measurement. This will help align stakeholders in efforts to prevent health impacts from heat and wildfire smoke in Washington state. Read the full report at: https://wadoh.info/41FPV1t
