Last week, some of our team were in beautiful Lisbon, supporting clients with speaking engagements, side events, and networking at Web Summit. This year, Web Summit drew a record-breaking 71,528 participants to explore the latest in tech innovation, from LLM’s transformative role in global markets to the future of the digital economy. #AI took center stage at the three-day event, with over 3,000 exhibitors demonstrating its transformative influence across industries such as finance, regulatory compliance, and real estate. As the #crypto market continues its upward trajectory, Wachsman clients took the stage to lead discussions on some of 2024's standout trends, including crypto ETFs, rising institutional adoption, and advancements in blockchain-as-a-service. Wachsman client Midnight, a data protection blockchain platform, organized #MidnightSocial as part of Night Summit, where revelers arrived to enjoy refreshments, insightful panel discussions, and networking with like-minded entrepreneurs on the future of blockchain adoption. This annual event, in support of Mark Pollock's #CollaborativeCures charity, is always a highlight, and this year was no exception! Yesterday afternoon, the London team buckled up for the fiscal event of the year: the UK’s Autumn Budget ??! With just over 100 days in office, the new Labour government faced a significant fiscal deficit — though how big that deficit is remains a heated debate. Regardless of the final figure, the Chancellor, Rt Hon Rachel Reeves, was inevitably going to have to raise taxes. Businesses and investors ultimately bore the brunt of the hikes in yesterday’s address. #DigitalAssets and #Blockchain failed to get a direct mention, but UK investors in these assets will soon face between 18% and 24% tax on profits above the threshold. The impact of this increase on the adoption of the asset class remains to be seen, however, the UK retains the lowest capital gains tax amongst G7 nations, and with the right investment and regulations has the potential to become a global crypto hub. The Chancellor's closing remarks challenged the Conservatives to explain how they would have run the budget differently — a moment of flair but a counterfactual that investors are likely to ponder over the coming weeks.
