Caroline Berg, senior at College of Charleston, represented our Council well at the national meeting in Washington, DC. She has a bright future!
As I begin the final stretch of my undergraduate career, I find myself looking back at some of the wonderful opportunities I have had. Reflecting on my WACA Student Scholars trip to Washington DC last November, I am so full of gratitude for the experience and the learning throughout the time we spent at the capital! Here are some photos and some memorable moments and discussions that resonate with me. Firstly, I had the honor of escorting the Ambassador from Djibouti to the closing luncheon. We had a long conversation about the future of intergovernmental organizations and diplomacy. Ambassador Doualeh shared so much wisdom from his experiences as a career diplomat. One of the conference sessions that especially resonated with me was on sports diplomacy with Travis J. Murphy. As a student athlete interested in international relations and global development, I learned so much about the opportunities that sport presents and the challenges faced by other nations' sports teams trying to travel to the United States for international sporting competitions, especially as the United States gears up to host a multitude of international events. At the House of Sweden, I had the wonderful opportunity to talk with WACA members from all over the country, and even found the wonderful members of the World Affairs Council of Detroit! The US Institute of Peace was definitely the highlight of Scholar Day! Learning about careers in peace negotiations processes solidified my passion for understanding the root causes of conflict and how to best achieve long lasting and sustainable peace. Lastly, the panel discussion surrounding women and development around the world was so inspiring and informative. As I have studied women in peacebuilding processes and have found a passion for studying women in peace negotiations and development, hearing from amazing women such as the Rwandan Ambassador to the United States Mathilde Mukantabana was truly invaluable. Being a student scholar was truly one of the highlights of my undergraduate career! I thank World Affairs Council of Charleston again for sponsoring my trip to DC. These reflections are only a few of many valuable things that I learned and experienced on this trip.

MARCH 11 @6-7 pm EVENING SPEAKER on DIPLOMACY IN THE 21st CENTURY. U.S. diplomats face a growing array of complex global challenges—from climate change and cyber threats to geopolitical tensions and humanitarian crises. The question is: Are our diplomats equipped with the tools, resources, and support they need to navigate them effectively? Against the backdrop of DOGE cuts to the U.S. State Department and many other government agencies, this discussion will explore the state of the U.S. Foreign Service, the key role diplomats play in safeguarding American interests, and what the future holds for diplomacy in a rapidly changing global landscape. Tom Yazdgerdi is the president of the American Foreign Service Association, which represents 16,800 active duty and retired members of the Foreign Service, the U.S. diplomatic corps. Billions of dollars are now at stake for American farmers and ranchers. Much of the food USAID uses for food aid programs is sourced from surplus food grown by American farmers and ranchers.

I never, ever look at comments on my videos, but my colleagues really pushed me to take a look at what people said about this Wired Tech Support video, which has over half a million views after only a couple of weeks out. Wow! To me, this really showcases what PRB is all about: data, evidence, contextualization, clear and simple explanations. Presenting information is NOT equivalent to making sure your audience UNDERSTANDS the information you're presenting. Big thanks to my colleagues for helping me prep and execute this. It was harder than it looks and was a team effort. #researchtranslation #population #data #sciencecommunication https://lnkd.in/eZyfN2aN

The U.S. Foreign Service received the 2024 International Service Award at the annual meeting of the World Affairs Councils of America last week. As the daughter and former spouse of career Foreign Service Officers, I can attest to the hard work they do--behind the scenes and often with little fanfare--to promote our country's safety and prosperity. Congratulations and THANK YOU to all my FSO friends around the world.
