Useful data can make managers more empathetic not less. I often hear that you cannot lead engineering using data, it is a people function. I would argue you cannot effectively lead engineering without any data either.

Well written Performance Reviews builds loyalty. "People leave managers, not companies." We all feel good when our managers take the time to write about what we've achieved over the past year. Your favorite manager is probably the one who really noticed all the great work you did and included them in your annual review. Now, as an engineering leader, it’s your turn to highlight your team’s work in a detailed review. Writing good reviews takes a lot of time. The standard practice to gathering information is one on ones and 360 reviews from their peers. What if you had access to hard data that can reveal a lot more than what people feel and often don't see? Time spent doing glue work, time spent in meetings, issues completed, code complexity delivered, PRs reviewed, contributions to major projects, long days spent to get something over the finish line, and so much more. What if you could gather all of this data with just one dashboard and include it in all of your direct reports' performance reviews? You will be the best manager they've ever worked with. Code Reviews: Much More Than Just Ensuring Code Quality A code review practice can tell you a lot about team. They can be a signal for healthy knowledge share or balanced workload distribution, or even an indicator for team trust. Consider this example: The top chart shows a constant flow of code reviews throughout the day, which is great. However, if reviews aren't adequately distributed, your most knowledgeable members struggle with constant context switching between helping the team and staying in the flow. The bottom chart reveals review an imbalanced distribution: 60% of the team handles only 30% of the load, while the top 15% handles the equivalent of 60% of the team. This could suggest the need for better knowledge sharing. Encouraging more team members to participate in reviews can lighten the load on others, expand their knowledge, and improve overall team productivity by reducing context switching. Next, you can set the goal and checkin to see if this helps improve your team's collaborative spirit.
