An interesting study assessing the impact of preoperative brain mapping and #IONM in #VBAS tubular retractor assisted #neurooncological surgery, (using the #minimallyinvasive system from Vycor Medical, Inc.). A key finding revealed that the above combination reduces the length of stay for patients undergoing resection for deep-seated lesions compared with no IONM and no preoperative mapping (18 days vs. 6.5 days). A shorter inpatient stay had a positive impact on quality of life for patients with brain tumours while also reducing hospital costs. Following yesterday's #VBAS post, this paper from the #JournalofNeurosurgery provides a further review of this highly effective and minimally invasive #BrainAccessSystem. Insightful conclusions regarding treatment of high-grade #gliomas. "Deep-seated #HGGs, which are surgically challenging and frequently considered inoperable, are amenable to resection through tubular retractors, with an acceptable safety profile. Such cytoreductive surgery may allow these patients to experience an overall survival comparable to those with more superficial tumours".
