Happy D.E.A.R day to you all! We are so excited to see Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu, State Minister for Primary Education, spotlighting our work in today’s The Daily Monitor Newspaper! This is a testament to the impact of the Hempel Foundation funded UCatchUp methodology we’ve been championing in all 264 government-aided primary schools in Kasese. In June 2023, the Ministry of Education and Sports validated the strategy to scale and sustain the contextualised, school-based, government-led Teaching at the Right Level model under the name "UCatchUp" Seeing VVOB's contribution acknowledged at the policy level affirms the dedication of our team, our partners, and the educators. When a national leader amplifies your work, it’s a signal that change is happening. And we are just getting started. If you haven’t read the commentary yet, you can read it here https://lnkd.in/d6EP6v8G! We are excited to share that VVOB participated in the Learning through Play (LtP) Evidence Summit at Four Points Hotel, Kololo yesterday, represented by Apiyo Loy Lyn. Lyn attending in the capacity of VVOB's IT'S PLAY project, participated in a panel discussion. She emphasised the role of professional development, training, curriculum, and resource support in equipping teachers to integrate play into learning. Additionally, she spoke about the teacher training manuals developed through IT’S PLAY with partners. These will soon be handed over to Primary Teachers Colleges—a major step in scaling and sustaining LtP beyond the project. The call to institutionalise LtP was reinforced as a vital step for long-term impact. Special thanks to the Play Matters Consortium (International Rescue Committee (IRC), Plan International Uganda, War Child and Innovations for Poverty Action) for organising the summit and IRC for sponsoring it. We celebrate the power of literacy and the impact of UCatchUp a remedial learning methodology routed in the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach! The numbers from government-aided primary schools in Kasese in 2024 speak for themselves. At baseline, only 19% of learners in grades three to five could read a paragraph. This increased to 50% by endline. Speaking on the 31 percentage point improvement, Brenda Abiro, our MEAL Advisor, said it best: "TaRL is a powerful method for change. The rise in reading proficiency shows that with the right support including external mentors, trained teachers, and quality learning materials, learners can thrive." This is a reminder that every child deserves the chance to read, learn, and therefore thrive. ?? #DEARDay #LiteracyMatters #DropEverythingAndRead #TaRL #UCatchUp
