The Vermont Department of Public Safety has hired Lisa Milot as the first director of its Division of Animal Welfare, the department announced in a press release on Monday. Milot, a lawyer and academic originally from Georgia, is expected to begin her role in May, according to the release. As the sole employee of the new division, her first task will be to formulate a comprehensive plan for coordinating Vermont’s disparate system of animal welfare services.?

In an interview last month, Tyler Allen, the adolescent services director at the Department for Children and Families, said that the state decided to scrap that proposed expansion after hearing concerns from Vergennes officials and others.

This legislative session, amid statewide concerns about rising costs in the state, lawmakers are trying to decide?whether to push forward?with the state’s climate goals?or pull back. Meanwhile, Patrick Parenteau, emeritus professor at Vermont Law and Graduate School, has been monitoring the back-and-forth.

Campion was one of just three Senate Democrats to vote in favor of?confirming Zoie Saunders?as secretary of education in 2024. Saunders, whom Scott eventually?reappointed to the position, was criticized by some legislators for her lack of experience with public schools.?

“While the reprieve may ease some short term pressures for some sectors, it does little to resolve the underlying issue of the uncertainty for businesses,” said Amy Spear, president of the Vermont Chamber of Commerce. “The start-stop approach to tariffs creates confusion.”
