Interior design major Ethan Greenough has built an impressive resume through experiential learning opportunities in the Virginia Tech School of Design. Throughout his time at Virginia Tech, Greenough has taken advantage of the many opportunities both inside and outside the Virginia Tech College of Architecture, Arts, and Design. Greenough is the current president of Interior Designers for Education and Sustainability (IDEAS) at Virginia Tech. In his second year, he was a sophomore liaison, and, as a junior, he was vice president of the organization. “When I got into the interior design program, I knew next to nothing about what it was. But I met people through IDEAS, and they quickly helped me out,” Greenough said. The?School of Design?senior values the idea of leading by example. He joined organizations and programs to learn from upperclass students. Now, he leads younger students and supports them in their exploration of the college and the opportunities it offers. On Veterans Day and every day, we are grateful for all those who have served, like Navy veteran and interior design senior Hannah Nofziger. Nofziger joined the Navy after high school graduation and spent most of the next six years in Japan. She loves telling stories about her military adventures and travels to countries like Australia, Korea, and Thailand. Her time in the service provided a sense of independence and time management. “I credit the Navy with helping me find a good path in life. I think I found my own voice in the military, and that pushed me in the right direction,” said Nofziger. Read more Hokie veteran stories at https://lnkd.in/gk2SXf-D.

At VT School of Design, we prioritize hands-on experiences that connect our students to real-world environments. This semester alone, our Industrial Design students traveled to Austin for the Industrial Design Conference, our Interior Design students visited top firms in DC, and our Landscape Architecture students attended their national conference in DC. These opportunities are invaluable in shaping the next generation of designers! #VTDesignSchool #FutureDesigners #HandsOnLearning #DesignEducation

?? A Look Back at a Newsworthy Month for Virginia Tech School of Design?? From landmark projects to empowering experiences, this month has been packed with School of Design achievements that showcase the power of community, creativity, and hands-on learning. Here are some of the highlights: ?? Atlantic Park Surf Park Vision https://lnkd.in/dxb_teb8 Virginia Tech alum Billy Almond '78 turned his lifelong dream into reality with Atlantic Park, a first-of-its-kind surf park that will transform Virginia Beach. With the support of fellow Hokie alums and backing from Pharrell Williams, this venue will combine surfing, entertainment, and community impact. Exciting times ahead for Virginia Beach! ?? Tackling E-Scooter Clutter https://lnkd.in/eXNbbjHT? Associate Professor Brook Kennedy and his students piloted a studio in Washington, D.C., to redesign urban infrastructure for scooter parking, aiming to reduce sidewalk congestion. Through the Urban Infrastructure Studio, Virginia Tech students took on real-world challenges and proposed creative solutions for a cleaner, more accessible cityscape. ?? Celebrating Industrial Design Educators https://lnkd.in/e_7ezAQn? At the IDSA International Design Conference, VT's Martha Sullivan and Isabel Prochner were recognized for their contributions to industrial design education. Sullivan received the Career Educator Award, while Prochner was honored with the Young Educator Award, both advancing the values of mentorship and community-driven design. ?? Sophomore Design Insights in D.C. https://lnkd.in/eGfs7Gf9? Second-year interior design students immersed themselves in the dynamic world of interior design with a field trip to Washington, D.C. Visiting firms and job sites, these students got a firsthand look at potential career paths and professional skills, fueling their enthusiasm and refining their aspirations. ?? Summer Bridge Program Adventures Four students from the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design shared their summer bridge program experiences, from Minneapolis to Vienna. Highlights included interning at Target, working with global professionals, and applying classroom knowledge to real-world projects — truly preparing them for the next chapter. Proud to see Hokies making waves (literally!) and driving change in fields across the board. Let’s keep the momentum going, Hokies! ?? #HokieNation #DesignInnovation #ExperientialLearning #VirginiaTech #VT

Second-year Virginia Tech Interior Design majors recently spent two days in Washington, D.C., immersing themselves in the spaces and places of some of the area’s most prestigious design firms and meeting the professionals they hope to one day consider colleagues. For more than a decade, these annual excursions have come at a critical time in the academic program for the students, who spent their first year completing the foundational courses required of all design and architecture majors in the college. One student remarked of the experience, "The most important thing I learned from this trip is simply getting out there and being ready to experience everything. I realized that it is crucial for me to step out of my comfort zone to thrive in the design world. I need to take every opportunity that crosses my path. This D.C. experience definitely got me more excited about my career. Observing the different branches of the design industry inspired me greatly — the opportunities are endless." ??
