One brand was with 50,000 Marathoners all 26.2 miles yesterday. And that was Nike Their localized campaign was an absolute masterstroke. Becuase it zeroed in on the runner's intense feelings to dramatize the spectator's overall experience of the event. It's always interesting to see the type of marketing brands develop around the NYC Marathon. New York Road Runners 'It Will Move You', lovingly encapsulated the entire experience, from runners to volunteers to spectators, while New Balance went with the strangely anemic 'Run Your Way'. The latter's blandness was especially stark. Allowing Nike to seize an advantage that they so typically do when they’re not at ‘official’ sponsor. Combine creativity, attitude, context, and humor to connect with the viewer. Its intense focus on what the runner was feeling elevated the OOH ads that dotted the route from the Staten Island Ferry to the finish at Central Park. Global and local, emotional and cajoling. Painful and euphoric. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry. This campaign had it all. Creative execution at its finest. Congrats to the Run team for a job well done.
