There are different types of #anesthesia. General anesthesia is most commonly used for major operations, such as knee and hip replacements, heart surgeries, and many kinds of surgical procedures to treat cancer. General anesthesia is medicine administered by an anesthesiologist, a medical doctor, through a mask or an IV placed in the vein. You will be unconscious, and many of your body’s functions will slow down or need help to work effectively. The anesthesiologist monitors your vital signs to make sure they are normal and steady while you remain unconscious and free of pain. Once your surgery is complete, your anesthesiologist will reverse the medication and be with you as you return to consciousness, continually monitoring your breathing, circulation, and oxygen levels. ?? ?? Update from the AMA on the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced cuts for 2025, reducing the anesthesia conversion factor by 2.20% and the broader Resource-Based Relative Value Scale by 2.83%. Unfortunately, without an inflation adjuster and the federal budget neutrality requirement, physician payments face another setback. On a positive note: ASA’s advocacy has led to a few wins: ? Approval of several fascial plane block codes with fair payment ? Removal of the point cap on topped-out measures in MIPS ? Retention of the anesthesiology measure set Stay tuned for further details from ASA on these policy changes and read more at https://lnkd.in/epAeVcDS. Dr. Donald E. Arnold, American Society of Anesthesiologists? president, notes that the association continues to remain committed to advocating for fair compensation for our members. #Anesthesiology #HealthcarePolicy #MedicareCuts

Election Day is behind us, but the fight to safeguard Virginia's supervision model of #anesthesia care is ahead at the General Assembly. We need your help to push back against efforts by CRNAs to change anesthesia care to a consultation model. Our opponents vastly surpass VSA in raising money for their PAC and membership engagement. Your support is crucial to compete with the CRNA lobby. Our VSA Board of Directors has set an ambitious goal to raise $75,000. We suggest a donation of $500 to $1,000 to provide the needed funds. We seek 100% participation to achieve our goal. ?? New findings presented at the Anesthesiology 2024 annual meeting show that poor sleep in the month before surgery significantly raises the risk of postoperative delirium, particularly in older adults. This important research underscores the need for quality sleep as part of pre-surgery preparation to ensure a smoother recovery.
