?? How did the IV fluid shortage disrupt standard anesthesia safety practices? A team including students from the VCU School of Medicine has published a case report on how the nationwide IV fluid shortage — caused by supply chain disruptions after Hurricane Helene — led to a missed detection of an intra-arterial injection during surgery. With hospitals forced to conserve IV fluids, a key safety measure — continuous IV infusion — was missing. This case highlights how such shortages can unexpectedly impact patient safety and anesthesiology practices. Get the full report in the comments.

During Women’s History Month, we're inspired by anesthesiology pioneer Dr. Isabella Coler Herb. Dr. Herb was the first physician-anesthetist for Dr. Charles Mayo at Mayo Clinic, established Rush-Presbyterian Hospital’s anesthesiology department, and became the first woman president of the American Association of Anesthetists. Dr. Herb designed innovative anesthesia equipment, including the Herb-Mueller ether vapor and vacuum apparatus (pictured), and advocated passionately for physician-led anesthesia care and better anesthesia education.

The Virginia Mercury recently wrote about our work to expand Virginia’s health care workforce. Reporter Charlotte Rene Woods shared the story of Ricky Miller — a Virginia Beach native currently practicing as a CAA in Indiana — who hopes to return home if licensure is approved. Senate Bill 882, now awaiting Gov. Youngkin’s decision, would allow certified anesthesiologist assistants to our health care system, allowing them to work under anesthesiologists. This will strengthen our work force, support our team-based approach and improve patient care. This legislation has bipartisan support, and the Medical Society of Virginia (MSV) has championed its passage.
