Founded in 2000, ERG is an environmental consulting small business providing National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Cultural Resources, Natural Resources, Compliance, Restoration, and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) services to federal, state, local/municipal, and commercial clients across the United States. As an Architectural Historian, you'll work on a variety of transportation, transit, municipal and federal projects and provide cultural resources support for various clients. The architectural historian career path provides the opportunity to work on projects that require compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and other federal and state cultural resource regulations.

The successful candidate will have strong technical report writing skills and ability to conduct archival research, and field surveys. The candidate will also evaluate buildings, structures, objects, landscapes, and districts for eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP); and provide analysis and cultural resources content for NEPA documents and cultural resources technical reports. You'll assist in the review of undertakings for potential impacts to historic properties; complete architectural surveys and State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) site forms; complete primary and secondary source research and develop historic contexts; identify periods of significance and character-defining features; and assist in the preparation of technical reports.

Prior working experience in Section 106 regulatory process and direct experience in preparing Section 106 compliance documents is preferred, but not required. The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team including archaeologists, architectural historians, historians, environmental scientists, engineers, and planners.

The majority of clients this position will support will be located in or around Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. This is a position, with upwards of 25% local and regional travel expected. On occasion, travel within the continental USA may be required. Candidates must have previous experience with travel and be comfortable with this model to be considered.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Complete historic property research at the State Historic Preservation Offices or on their online databases.
  • Conducts archival and background research.
  • Documents methodologies and findings of research and investigations.
  • Prepares architectural inventory forms.
  • Writes architectural and historical resources reports.
  • Conduct field survey to document historic properties and assess project effects.
  • Prepare Section 106 and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) reports.
  • Simultaneously manage electronic deliverables on many ongoing projects, as well as complete assignments on-time and within budget
  • At times, travel on short notice (one week or less) will be required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Public History, Architecture, or a related field.
  • Meet the Secretary of Interior's Standards for professional qualifications in architectural history or history.
  • Three to five years of professional experience in architectural history or a related field.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, and Microsoft Teams.
  • Oral and written English communication skills.
  • Documentation and research experience, including Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record documentation, historic contexts, and NRHP eligibility determinations and effects assessments.
  • Good photography skills.
  • Knowledge of the NHPA Section 106 consultation process.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be capable of renting a vehicle.
  • United States resident

Preferred Qualifications

  • Field experience using established methods and techniques of applied architectural research for historic buildings and structures.
  • Knowledge of and experience with 'recent past' resources.
  • Experience working with both the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the Texas Historical Commission (THC).
